Description

The Mystic Long John Surf 2026 is a 2mm wetsuit built for warm to mild water sessions. Sleeveless with full-length legs, it keeps your core and lower body insulated while leaving your shoulders completely unencumbered—ideal for the paddle-heavy disciplines where restricted shoulders cost you performance.

It's the suit you reach for when the water is warm enough that a full 3/2 feels like overkill, but you still want something on your legs for UV protection, warmth on the wind, and that bit of compression that keeps you comfortable across a long session. Back zip, pull on, get in the water.

Who It's For

  • Disciplines: Kitesurfing, wingfoiling, surfing, SUP, windsurfing
  • Level: All levels
  • Best for: Warm water sessions (roughly 18–24°C) where you want leg coverage without restricting your paddle or arm movement
  • Season: UK summer (June–September); year-round in warmer destinations

Key Features

  • 2mm MX2 Neoprene — Mystic's entry-level neoprene offering a solid balance of stretch, rebound and durability for warm-water use
  • Flatlock Stitching — panels are overlapped and stitched flat, creating a strong, comfortable seam that won't dig in; suited to warm water where a sealed seam isn't required
  • Back Zip Entry — full-length zip across the upper back for quick, fuss-free entry and exit on the beach
  • Sleeveless Cut — zero restriction at the shoulders; your paddle stroke, pump cycle, or duck-dive is completely unhindered
  • Full-Length Legs — core-to-ankle coverage for warmth and UV protection on your lower body while keeping your upper body free
  • Crossed Back Panel Design — the back panel construction pulls across the shoulder blades, enhancing rotational freedom without the suit riding up

Real-World Feel

On a flat-water kite session in 20°C water with a decent breeze cooling you down, a full suit can leave you overheating inside ten minutes. The Long John Surf threads the needle: the neoprene on your legs cuts the wind chill when you're waterstarting or riding upwind, your core stays warm without cooking, and your arms are totally free. The flatlock seams are comfortable enough that you forget you're wearing a suit—no chafing under the harness, no restriction at the shoulders. It's not a winter suit and it's not trying to be. It's a one-piece you'll actually want to wear when the sun is out.

Setup / Fit

Size to your height and chest measurement first—Mystic suits run true to size. The back zip means you can get in and out solo without needing a cord pull or a second person. Once on, work any excess neoprene up from the knees and ankles before zipping—this gives you a snug, flush fit across the torso. The suit will loosen slightly after its first few sessions as the neoprene beds in. If you're between sizes, go up: a slightly looser Long John is far more comfortable than one that fights your breathing.

Materials

  • Neoprene: 2mm MX2 — Mystic's warm-water neoprene compound, chosen for stretch and durability at an accessible price point
  • Seams: Flatlock stitched throughout — overlapping panels, flat-sewn, no glue. Comfortable against skin; water passes through seams freely (correct for water temperatures above 17–18°C)
  • Zip: Back zip with security loop
  • Lining: Single-lined construction for lightness and fast drying

Size Chart

Measure your height and chest circumference (at the widest point) before selecting a size. All measurements in centimetres.

Size Height (cm) Chest (cm) Waist (cm)
S 170–175 89–94 75–80
M 176–182 94–99 80–85
L 182–188 99–104 85–90
XL 186–196 104–111 90–96
XXL 190–198 111–118 96–102

Not sure? Size up — a longer torso can be accommodated; a suit that's too short across the back will be uncomfortable under a harness.

Pairs Well With

In cooler UK summer conditions, layer a neoprene rashguard or 1mm top underneath for extra core warmth without adding bulk. A Mystic harness seats well over a Long John with no neoprene-on-neoprene bunching at the waist. If the wind picks up and the air temperature drops, a neoprene gilet over the top extends the range considerably.

Why We Stock It

At Northern Watersports we ride these suits ourselves—Long Johns are the go-to on warm Wirral summer sessions where a full suit is too much but boardshorts aren't quite right. We stock the Mystic Long John Surf because it does a simple job very well: it's affordable, well-made, dries quickly, and doesn't fight you when you're trying to kite or foil. It's also the suit we recommend to beginners on lesson days during summer—easy on and off, comfortable all day, and no complaints about cold legs. If you're unsure whether it's the right choice for your water temperature or discipline, drop us a message or come into the shop.

FAQs

What water temperature is the Mystic Long John Surf 2026 suitable for?

The 2mm neoprene and flatlock seams make this suit best suited to water temperatures from around 18°C upwards. In the UK that covers most of the summer months (July–September in the north, slightly longer in the south). Below 18°C you'll likely want a 3/2mm full suit with glued and blind-stitched seams for better thermal performance.

Can I use this suit for kitesurfing and wingfoiling, or is it just for surfing?

The name says 'Surf' but it works perfectly across all disciplines. The sleeveless cut and crossed back panel design are actually a strong match for kitesurfing and wingfoiling, where shoulder mobility matters even more than in surfing. It's what a number of us at Northern Watersports wear on summer kite sessions.

Is a Long John warmer than a shorty wetsuit?

Generally yes. A Long John covers your legs fully, which a shorty doesn't. Your legs account for a meaningful chunk of heat loss, especially when you're in the water repeatedly. If you're choosing between the two for slightly cooler conditions, the Long John is the better call.

What's the difference between the Long John Surf and the Short John Surf?

The Long John has full-length legs and no sleeves. The Short John has short legs and no sleeves—more like a 2mm vest-and-shorts in one. The Long John is warmer and better for mild water; the Short John is the choice for genuinely warm conditions or when you simply want the least amount of neoprene on your body.

Do I need to wear anything underneath?

Not necessarily. In warmer water a rash vest underneath is comfortable and adds a small amount of warmth. In cooler summer conditions a 1mm thermal underlayer under the Long John can extend its range noticeably. Most people wear it straight on skin.

How do I care for a flatlock-stitched wetsuit?

Rinse thoroughly in fresh water after every session—salt crystals accelerate neoprene breakdown. Turn it inside out to dry in the shade (UV degrades neoprene faster than water does). Avoid leaving it folded in a bag for long periods, and never tumble dry or put it on a direct heat source. Store hanging or flat when possible.
