Description
The Mystic Short John Surf 2026 is a 2mm wetsuit designed for maximum freedom in warm water. Short legs and no sleeves mean your full range of motion is completely unconstrained—it's the minimum viable neoprene: enough to keep your core comfortable, nothing more to get in the way.
When the water is genuinely warm and a longer suit would have you overheating, the Short John is the answer. It's also the easiest suit to get on and off quickly, which matters when you're chasing tides or doing multiple sessions in a day. Back zip entry, pull it on in seconds, and get in the water.
Who It's For
- Disciplines: Kitesurfing, wingfoiling, surfing, SUP, windsurfing
- Level: All levels
- Best for: Warm water sessions (20°C and above) where maximum freedom of movement is the priority
- Season: Peak UK summer (July–August); year-round in warmer destinations
Key Features
- 2mm MX2 Neoprene — Mystic's warm-water neoprene, offering a strong stretch-to-durability ratio at an accessible price point
- Flatlock Stitching — panels overlapped and stitched flat for a strong, skin-comfortable seam with no internal ridges; appropriate for warmer water where a fully sealed seam isn't needed
- Back Zip Entry — full-length zip across the upper back for fast, independent entry and exit—no cords, no assistance required
- Sleeveless Cut — complete freedom at the shoulders for paddling, pumping, and any arm-driven movement
- Short Legs — coverage to mid-thigh keeps your core and upper legs warm without restricting knee bend or movement in the water
- Core Warmth Without Bulk — the torso coverage keeps wind chill off your core and provides UV protection where you need it most
Real-World Feel
In 22°C water on a sunny day with a light onshore, a Short John is genuinely all you need. Your arms are completely unrestricted for the kite bar, wing handle, or paddle, and you won't be sweating through a longer suit. The short legs mean no neoprene bunching behind the knees when you're riding or crouching on a foil board. The MX2 neoprene has a slightly firmer feel than premium rubber—it's not the softest suit on the market, but it's honest about what it is: a well-priced, practical warm-water suit that does its job without fuss. After a season it beds in and softens up. Dries quickly hanging on a rail, which in UK summer conditions matters more than you'd think.
Setup / Fit
Size to your height and chest measurement first—the Short John runs true to Mystic's standard sizing. The back zip makes independent dressing easy: zip up from the back and you're done. Work any bunched neoprene up the thighs before zipping to get a clean torso fit. Because the legs are short, fit is less critical there—focus on getting the torso snug and the back panel lying flat under your harness. If you're between sizes, go up: a slightly relaxed fit is more comfortable than one that restricts breathing.
Materials
- Neoprene: 2mm MX2 — Mystic's warm-water compound, selected for stretch, durability and value
- Seams: Flatlock stitched throughout — overlapping panels, flat-sewn. Comfortable against skin; water passes through freely. Correct construction for water above 18–20°C
- Zip: Back zip with security loop
- Lining: Single-lined construction for a lightweight, fast-drying suit
Size Chart
Measure your height and chest circumference (at the widest point) before selecting a size. All measurements in centimetres.
| Size | Height (cm) | Chest (cm) | Waist (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | 170–175 | 89–94 | 75–80 |
| M | 176–182 | 94–99 | 80–85 |
| L | 182–188 | 99–104 | 85–90 |
| XL | 186–196 | 104–111 | 90–96 |
| XXL | 190–198 | 111–118 | 96–102 |
Not sure? Size up — a snug torso fit is important but a suit that's too tight will restrict breathing. When in doubt, err larger.
Pairs Well With
A UV-protective rash vest worn underneath protects your skin on longer sunny sessions. A Mystic harness sits cleanly over the Short John—no bulk at the waist to interfere with harness placement. For days when it's warm in the water but the air temperature drops when you're out of it, a light neoprene gilet worn over the top makes the Short John usable in a wider range of conditions. Pair with neoprene boots if the seabed or rocks require it.
Why We Stock It
At Northern Watersports, the Short John Surf is the suit we recommend for summer beginners who don't want to sweat through a full wetsuit during a lesson, and for experienced riders who just want the least amount of neoprene between them and the water on a warm day. Mystic kit has always been a staple at this shop—it suits the kitesurfing and wingfoiling disciplines it was designed around, the build quality holds up across a season, and the price is honest. The Short John Surf at £99.95 is one of the most straightforward value propositions in the range. If you're unsure whether it's right for your conditions, we're on the Wirral and we'll give you a straight answer.
FAQs
What water temperature is the Mystic Short John Surf 2026 suitable for?
The 2mm flatlock construction suits water temperatures of around 20°C and above. In the UK that's peak summer—roughly July and August in northern waters, a little longer further south. If you're riding in 18–20°C water you may be fine, but if you run cold or the sessions are long, the Long John Surf (full legs) or a 3/2mm suit would be a safer choice.
What's the difference between the Short John Surf and the Long John Surf?
The Short John has short legs (to mid-thigh) and no sleeves. The Long John has full-length legs and no sleeves. The Short John is the warmer-water, maximum-mobility option. The Long John adds leg coverage for warmth and UV protection without adding any sleeve restriction—a good middle ground for mild summer conditions.
Can I use the Short John Surf for wingfoiling and kitesurfing?
Absolutely. Despite the 'Surf' name, the sleeveless cut and flatlock construction make it well-suited to any discipline where arm movement is critical. Quite a few of our wing and kite customers wear Short Johns through the warmer months. The only thing to be aware of is wind chill—if you're out in a strong wind, exposed arms and legs can cool you down faster than the water temperature alone suggests.
Is the Short John Surf the same as a shorty wetsuit?
Very similar. A traditional shorty typically has short sleeves and short legs. The Short John Surf is fully sleeveless with short legs, so it's slightly less coverage than a standard shorty—but that also means more freedom of movement in the shoulders. Which is better depends on your discipline and personal preference.
How do I look after a flatlock wetsuit?
Rinse in fresh water after every session—salt left in flatlock seams will degrade them over time. Dry inside-out in the shade (direct UV breaks down neoprene). Store flat or loosely hung rather than folded tight. Never tumble dry or use a direct heat source. Treated properly, a 2mm flatlock suit like this will last multiple seasons.
Does the back zip let water in?
Yes—back zip suits flush more than chest zip designs, and flatlock seams aren't waterproofed. This is entirely normal and expected for a warm-water suit. At 20°C+ a small amount of water flushing is not a thermal issue. If you're in cooler water or riding in strong winds, a chest zip suit with glued and blind-stitched seams (like higher-end Mystic models) provides better insulation.
