Description

The Mystic Motion Shorty 3/2mm Fzip is a traditional short-arm, short-leg wetsuit built for the warmest sessions in your calendar. It shares the same MX3 neoprene, GBS construction and front-zip entry system as the rest of the Motion family, but strips back the coverage so you can move freely when the water is genuinely warm. If you want a quality wetsuit for Mediterranean kite trips, SUP touring in summer, or wingfoiling when the Irish Sea hits its August peak, this is where to start.

It is made from Mystic's MX3 neoprene — the same stretchy, recycled-fibre material used across the Motion and Majestic ranges — with a Recycled Extend & Thermo lining on the chest and back, and a high-stretch Recycled XTR broken lining on the arms and legs. The YKK front zip means no bulk down your spine, the Glideskin neck sits flat against your skin without chafing, and Hex-tech kneepads protect the panels you land on. It covers the disciplines well too: kitesurfing, wingfoiling, pumpfoiling and SUP all work perfectly in a 3/2mm shorty when conditions call for it.

Who It's For

  • Disciplines: Kitesurfing, wingfoiling, pumpfoiling, SUP
  • Level: All — from first-season learners to experienced riders
  • Best for: Warm-water travel, Mediterranean/Canary Islands trips, summer UK sessions in peak heat, holiday surfing
  • Water temperature: 18–26°C (ideal), stretches to 16°C with rash guard underneath

Key Features

  • MX3 Neoprene — Mystic's mid-range recycled neoprene; excellent stretch-to-warmth ratio without the premium price tag
  • GBS (Glued Blind Stitched) seams — seams glued and blind-stitched on the inside so no needle punctures go all the way through; significantly reduces flushing at the seams
  • YKK Front Zip (Fzip) — horizontal chest zip with no spine panel; maximises back flex and reduces pressure points during harness use
  • Waterproof stretch taping (50% coverage) — critical seam areas taped on the inside to block water ingress without sacrificing flexibility
  • Recycled Extend & Thermo lining (chest and back) — thermal lining where you need warmth most; made from recycled materials
  • Recycled XTR broken lining (arms and legs) — high-stretch lining on the limbs keeps the shorty moving freely without restriction
  • Glideskin neck — smooth neoprene collar sits flush against the skin for a drip-free, comfortable seal
  • Aquabarrier — silicone print across the chest panel overlap prevents water working its way in through the zip closure
  • Hex-tech kneepads (4-way stretch) — reinforced panels on the knees that stretch with you rather than fighting your movement
  • Key Pocket 2.0 — internal key loop with mini buckle; secure, compact, won't dig in under a harness
  • Traditional shorty cut — short arms and short legs for maximum sun exposure and heat management in warm conditions

Real-World Feel

A 3/2mm shorty lives in a narrow but very useful weather window. Get it right and it is genuinely the most enjoyable wetsuit to session in — your arms and legs are free, you dry off in minutes, and you are not fighting neoprene fatigue during a long foil session. The MX3 neoprene has enough stretch that it moves with you from the first duck-dive, and the front zip means the back panel can really open up on your backhand reach — useful on a kite or a wing. The Hex-tech kneepads are a practical touch; if you're pumpfoiling or SUP paddling you will be on your knees more than you expect. The Glideskin neck is noticeably more comfortable than a standard neoprene collar over a long session.

The honest comparison: if you're riding the Wirral or anywhere in the UK between April and June, or again in September and October, you'll want the Mystic Motion Longarm Shorty 3/2mm (£199.95) instead — the full arm coverage makes a real difference in an Irish Sea swell with any sort of wind chill. This Motion Shorty is the one to pack for your kite trip to Tarifa, Dakhla, Rhodes or the Canaries, or for those occasional flat-calm days in August when the water is as warm as the Irish Sea gets.

Setup & Fit

Front-zip entry: loosen the zip completely before stepping in, pull on legs first, then arms, then shrug the chest panel up and zip across. You'll want a helping hand the first few times — a length of cord attached to the zipper pull makes it easier to self-zip. The Glideskin neck needs to sit flat without any folds; run a finger around the inside once zipped to check the seal. Mystic wetsuits run true to size in the Motion range. If you're between sizes, size up — a shorty can feel tight across the shoulders if it's too small, which limits your paddle stroke. If in doubt, contact us on the Wirral and we'll help you dial it in.

Size Chart

Size Height (cm) Chest (cm) Waist (cm)
XS 164–169 85–89 70–75
S 170–175 89–94 75–80
M 176–181 94–99 80–85
L 182–186 99–104 85–90
XL 186–192 104–111 90–96
XXL 192–198 111–118 96–102

Measurements are body measurements, not garment measurements. If you are between sizes, size up. Chest is measured at the widest point; waist at the navel.

Pairs Well With

  • Mystic boots and gloves — not that you'll need gloves in 25°C water, but if you're extending the season you might want a 2mm glove and 3mm round-toe boot to push into spring
  • Changing mats and robes — a changing robe is just as useful at a foreign beach when you've nowhere private to change; a mat keeps your feet clean in the car park

Why We Stock It

We're a rider-owned shop on the Wirral, which means the team here spends a lot of time on the water in the Irish Sea — and a lot of time travelling to sessions that are actually warm. The Motion Shorty is the suit we pack for kite trips to Tarifa and wing trips to Greece. It performs well above its price point because Mystic has put genuine thought into the materials — recycled neoprene and recycled linings that don't compromise on warmth or stretch. At £169.95 it's the most affordable entry point into the Motion range, and it earns its spot in your kit bag every time you travel. We stock the full size run from XS to XXL and can advise on fit if you need it — just give us a ring or drop into the shop.

FAQs

What water temperature is the Motion Shorty 3/2mm suited to?

It's most comfortable in water between 18°C and 26°C — think the Canary Islands year-round, the Mediterranean in summer, and the best days the Irish Sea has to offer in July and August. Below 18°C you'll start to feel the cold in your arms and legs; at that point a fullsuit or the Longarm Shorty is a better choice. Above 26°C you may not need a wetsuit at all, though the 3/2mm still offers useful UV and abrasion protection.

What's the difference between this Shorty and the Mystic Motion Longarm Shorty 3/2mm?

Both suits share the same MX3 neoprene, GBS seams, front zip, and core feature set. The key difference is coverage: this Motion Shorty has short arms and short legs — a traditional shorty cut — while the Motion Longarm Shorty (£199.95) has full-length arms and a short leg cut. In UK waters, even in summer, the wind chill on bare arms makes a real difference once you're moving at speed on a kite or wing. The Longarm Shorty is our recommendation for April through October in Britain. The Shorty is the one to pack for a warm-water trip, or for those rare flat-calm August days when the Irish Sea is genuinely warm and you want maximum freedom of movement.

Does a front zip work well on a shorty?

Yes — and arguably better than on a fullsuit. There's no long vertical back panel to contend with, the entry is straightforward, and the chest zip closes cleanly across a short torso panel. The YKK zip is robust, the Aquabarrier silicone print stops water creeping in between the overlapping panels, and the absence of a back zip means you won't have anything rubbing against your lower back under a harness. The only adjustment: get used to doing the zip up before you launch rather than on the beach in a rush.

Will this work for pumpfoiling or SUP as well as kitesurfing?

Absolutely. The traditional shorty cut is actually ideal for paddling and foiling — your arms move without any neoprene resistance, and there's no lower-leg panel to cramp your footwork on the board. The Hex-tech kneepads are a genuine practical feature for foiling; if you're getting on and off the board or recovering from wobbles, you'll be glad they're there. The Key Pocket 2.0 is useful if you're launching from a beach where you need to lock a car.

How do I look after the neoprene?

Rinse in cold fresh water after every session — never hot, which degrades neoprene faster than anything else. Hang to dry inside-out, away from direct sun (UV breaks down neoprene over time). Store flat or loosely rolled rather than folded over a hanger, which can crease and eventually crack the material. Don't leave it in the boot of a car in summer heat. Treated well, a Mystic Motion will last several seasons of regular use.

How does the sizing run — do I need to size up?

The Motion range runs true to size. Use the size chart above and match to your body measurements rather than your usual clothing size. If you're right on the border between two sizes, go up — a shorty that's too small will pull across the shoulders and restrict your paddle or wing stroke. If you have any doubt, call us or message us through the site and we'll talk it through. We've sized a lot of customers into Mystic suits over the years and we know the range well.
