Description
The AFS Black Bird V3 is a dedicated high-performance downwind and light-wind foil board, built entirely from full carbon in AFS's factory in Brittany, France. Developed from years of competition downwind SUP foiling, the Blackbird shape has been refined across three generations into a board that paddles with exceptional efficiency, connects to your foil instantly, and flies with pinpoint directional control. The V3 is the 2025 iteration — the most evolved version yet.
Construction is AFS Advanced standard: triaxial carbon sandwich layup over high-density foam core, with strategic carbon reinforcements around the mast track area and tail block. The result is a board that weighs between 5.3 kg and 5.8 kg depending on size — genuinely light for a full-length downwind shape — and that doesn't flex underfoot when you're pumping hard through a lull. Every board is hand-finished in France and backed by a three-year warranty. These are wing foil boards built to last.
Who It's For
Discipline: Downwind SUP foiling first, light-wind wing foiling and SUP surf foiling second. If your main goal is downwinding — reading swells, linking bumps, paddling fast take-offs — this is the board. It's not a dedicated wing board, but riders who wing in light conditions love the glide and paddle-assist it brings to marginal days.
Level: Intermediate to advanced. The narrow widths reward good foiling technique; beginners will find most sizes a challenging paddle platform. Those stepping up from wider foil boards will feel the difference immediately.
Best for: Coastal downwinders, prone-to-foil runs, light wind sessions where extra glide helps you stay flying, and SUP surf foiling in clean conditions.
Key Features
- Deep double concave hull – Adds forgiveness on touchdowns and damps re-entry impacts while maintaining directional hold during the paddle phase
- Hardened lifted tail with sharpened rail exits – New for V3: the tail tracks straight under paddle load but releases cleanly in turns without catching
- Revised deck recess – V3 update improves water drainage during prone paddle starts
- Universal long mast track – Extended US track allows precise fore-aft foil positioning and accepts any brand's foil hardware
- Optional footstrap inserts – "Y" configuration inserts available for winging or added control in choppy conditions
- 3/4-length EVA deck pad – Fitted as standard; cushions knees during prone starts and keeps grip underfoot when winging
- Triaxial carbon sandwich construction – Full carbon inside and out; stiff, light, and resonant underfoot
- Hand-built in France – Every board individually crafted at AFS HQ in Brittany; quality control is personal
- Three-year warranty – Outstanding coverage from any major foil brand
Real-World Feel
The Blackbird V3 rewards commitment. Paddle out on one for the first time and the narrow nose feels different — you're channelled into a more active, alert stance than you'd use on a wide wing board. But once you get the paddle cadence, the board accelerates cleanly and the foil lifts almost before you expect it. In downwind conditions, the double concave hull means bumpy re-entries don't stop your momentum dead; the board skips back into glide rather than burying. The hardened tail rails on the V3 are a genuine improvement over earlier versions — you can lean into a long carve without the tail washing out. For wing riders, it's most at home in 10–16 knots where you want every bit of glide the hull can offer. In that wind range, the extra waterline length and focused volume distribution means you're up and riding in gusts that would leave a stubbier board wallowing.
Setup & Fit
For downwinding, most riders set the mast 2–4 cm forward of centre on the track to encourage early lift on the paddle. For winging, bring the mast back toward centre or slightly aft for better stance balance. The optional footstrap inserts are worth fitting if you're using the board regularly for winging in chop — the "Y" configuration lets you choose strap or strapless depending on conditions. Pair with a high-aspect front wing for maximum glide in downwind; a mid-aspect setup for more forgiving winging.
Construction
AFS Advanced construction means triaxial carbon fibre woven over a high-density foam core, with additional carbon reinforcement around the foil box and tail block where stress concentrations are highest. Each board is individually finished at AFS's own facility in Pencran, Brittany. Mast box: long universal US track compatible with all major foil brands. The 3/4-length EVA pad is bonded direct to the deck. Weight: approximately 5.3–5.8 kg depending on size.

Narrower widths paddle faster and suit more experienced prone foilers; wider options offer more stability for winging and first downwind sessions. Not sure which size? Get in touch — we're happy to talk it through.
Pairs Well With
- AFS hydrofoils — matched engineering from the same brand; the Blackbird was designed around AFS foil geometry
- Wing foil harnesses — essential for longer sessions; takes load off arms when you're winging
Why We Stock It
At Northern Watersports we've seen a lot of boards come through the door, and the Blackbird V3 is one that experienced riders actually get excited about. It's not the easiest board to get on — the narrower options demand respect — but for anyone serious about downwinding or pushing their light-wind winging further, it delivers in a way that wider, more forgiving shapes simply can't match. AFS build everything themselves in France, which matters to us: it means consistent quality, real warranty support, and a brand that takes responsibility for what they make. If you're ready to step up to a proper performance foil shape, this is where to start that conversation.
FAQs
Is the AFS Black Bird V3 suitable for beginner wing foilers?
Honestly, no — not in the narrower widths. The 7'6" and slim 8'0" sizes are proper performance shapes that assume you can already foil confidently and have decent paddle technique. If you're learning to wing foil, look at wider dedicated wing boards first. The wider 8'4" x 21" and 8'8" x 20½" options are more forgiving and could work for confident improvers, but the Blackbird's real home is with progressing-to-advanced riders who want performance.
Can I use the Blackbird V3 just for wing foiling, not downwinding?
Absolutely. Many riders use it purely for winging in lighter winds where the extra length and glide keeps you flying when a shorter board would stall. It's not a dedicated wing board — you won't be doing tight freestyle turns — but for freeride winging in 10–18 knots it's a brilliant tool, especially with footstraps fitted.
What foil brands are compatible with the mast track?
The Blackbird V3 uses a long universal US mast track, which accepts hardware from AFS, Axis, Slingshot, Cabrinha, Duotone, F-One and most other major brands. You'll need the relevant adapter plate for your specific foil if it's not AFS.
Which size should I choose for downwinding?
Matching board width to your skill level matters more than length. Narrow options (16½"–18") suit riders with strong prone paddle technique who prioritise speed. Wider options (19½"–21") give more stability and are better for those earlier in their downwind journey or wanting a more relaxed session. As a rough guide: 100–110 L for riders under 75 kg with solid foiling skills; 115–120 L for 75–90 kg or those wanting more float; 130 L+ for heavier riders or rougher water. Not sure? Drop us a message.
Does the board come with a deck pad?
Yes. Every Blackbird V3 comes with a 3/4-length EVA deck pad fitted as standard. Footstrap inserts are optional and can be specified at order — just ask when you get in touch.
How long is the warranty?
AFS backs the Blackbird V3 with a three-year manufacturer's warranty — one of the longest in the foil board category. As an authorised UK stockist, Northern Watersports handles warranty claims directly with AFS on your behalf.
