Description
The AFS Blackbird Mid Length Fibreglass brings one of the most celebrated shapes in modern foiling within reach of a much wider range of riders. The Blackbird's mid-length outline — compact but long, wide but precise — was built for light-wind wingfoiling and effortless downwind linking. The fibreglass construction makes that same silhouette accessible without compromising the feel that riders have been raving about since the carbon version launched. This is a board you buy and don't trade out of for years.
Available from AFS in three sizes and two colourways, it spans beginner-friendly downwind all the way to performance surf foil, making it one of the most capable wing foil boards we carry. Whether you're hunting open-water bumps, making the most of light Wirral sea breezes, or getting into SUP foil, the Blackbird Mid Length handles it without complaint.
Who It's For
Discipline: Wingfoiling, downwind, SUP foil, surf foil (5'6 especially)
Level: Intermediate to advanced
Best for: Riders who want genuine performance across multiple disciplines, light-wind specialists, anyone stepping up from a higher-volume freeride board
Key Features
- Mid-length outline — compact nose rocker for easy glide, T-tail for fast foil release and minimal drag at start-up
- Hollow concave deck — drops your centre of gravity, keeps feet close to the foil for instinctive control
- Advanced box foil track — AFS's double-rail US system, precision mast placement with front-to-back adjustment
- PVC sandwich glass construction — closed-mould lay-up for even wall thickness, real-world durability and a weight that won't slow you down
- Two-year manufacturer warranty — AFS backs this build for the long haul
- Two colourways: Standard and Blue — same board, your preference
- Full EVA deck pad and strap inserts — ready to ride, no extra kit needed
- Versatile size range — 5'6 to 6'3 covers surf foil to downwind SUP
Real-World Feel
The Blackbird Mid Length's reputation is built on one thing: it foils earlier and more effortlessly than boards of its volume have any right to. The mid-length outline creates glide that closes the gap to the carbon Blackbird Advanced more than you'd expect. In light wind, it climbs onto the foil smoothly and stays there even through quiet patches. In downwind conditions, the hull shape helps you find and link bumps with less effort — you spend more time flying and less time chasing. The 5'6 surprises you in surf — it's nimble and responsive even in clean overhead sets. A genuinely multi-talented board.
Setup & Fit
Size selection here depends on your primary use as much as your weight. The 5'6 (75L) is the surf foil and performance winging size — best for lighter riders (up to around 75 kg) or heavier riders who are already confident and want maximum feel. The 6'0 (90L) is the all-rounder — works for winging, downwind and SUP foil for riders from around 70–95 kg. The 6'3 (100L) is the light-wind and downwind specialist — great for bigger riders or anyone who wants maximum ease of take-off across disciplines. If you're between sizes, go up rather than down while you're still building time on a mid-length.
Construction
AFS's PVC sandwich glass construction uses an outer closed mould, with all fabrics, reinforcements and foil housings laid up and then cured together in a single bake. The process — borrowed from their higher-end builds — gives consistent resin saturation, accurate wall thickness and reliable weight across batches. An EPS core sits at the centre, with PVC reinforcing the mast area, rails and deck zones. The result is meaningfully stiffer and lighter than a traditional hand-lay fibreglass build, and the two-year warranty shows AFS's confidence in the process.
Size Guide
| Length | Width | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| 5'6 | 20.5" | 75L |
| 6'0 | 22" | 90L |
| 6'3 | 22.5" | 100L |
Pairs Well With
- AFS foils and wings — designed around AFS's track system; foil fitment is seamless and you'll get the most from the shape with AFS hardware
- Wetsuits — a 4/3 or 5/4 is the practical choice for most of the UK season
- Wing foil harnesses — extended downwind sessions are much more comfortable with a harness taking arm load
- SUP paddles — if you're using the Blackbird for SUP foil or downwind, a lightweight adjustable paddle is worth having
Why We Stock It
The Blackbird name carries real weight in the foiling world, and the fibreglass mid-length version deserves to. We stock it because it genuinely delivers the Blackbird sensation at a price that's actually achievable for most riders — and because it's a board we can recommend without reservation to anyone who wants to take their foiling seriously across more than one discipline. At Northern Watersports we ride this stuff ourselves, and the Blackbird ML sits in rotation year-round. A board this capable, this versatile and backed by a proper two-year warranty is exactly the kind of thing we exist to sell.
FAQs
What's the difference between the AFS Blackbird Mid Length Fibreglass and the carbon Advanced Blackbird?
The carbon Advanced Blackbird is AFS's full-performance flagship — lighter, stiffer and more precise underfoot. It's the choice for experienced riders who want the absolute last word in performance. The fibreglass Mid Length shares the same outline and hull design but uses a PVC sandwich glass layup that's heavier and slightly less stiff. In real-world riding the difference is less dramatic than you might think — the Mid Length still foils beautifully — but the carbon version rewards riders who are already extracting the maximum from the shape. For most people, the fibreglass version is the smarter buy.
Can I use the 5'6 Blackbird Mid Length for surf foiling?
Yes, and it's genuinely good at it. At 75L it's compact enough to feel nimble in a wave, the mid-length nose reduces pearling and the outline gives enough rail to drive turns in cleaner surf. It's not a dedicated surf foil board — you'll want a shorter, lower-volume shape for serious performance surfing — but for UK beach break and coastal runners it works really well.
What foil track does the Blackbird Mid Length use?
It uses AFS's double-rail US advanced box system, which allows front-to-back mast adjustment so you can tune the trim to your foil and riding style. It's compatible with AFS masts and bases natively. For non-AFS foils, check the base format before ordering — message us and we'll check compatibility with your specific setup.
Is the fibreglass Blackbird Mid Length suitable for beginners?
It's a better fit for riders who have already found their footing — if you can get up and ride for decent stretches, you'll thrive on this board. Complete beginners are usually better served by something with more volume and a wider outline to build confidence. That said, the 6'3 at 100L is one of the more forgiving options in the range and some riders with good water sports backgrounds jump straight to it successfully. Ask us — we can be honest about whether it's right for your level.
How does the Blackbird Mid Length perform in light winds?
Exceptionally well — it's arguably where the shape is at its best. The mid-length outline generates glide well above what pure volume numbers suggest, and the concave deck keeps you in a low, connected riding position that makes pumping more efficient. It's a board that makes marginal wind days surprisingly fun rather than frustrating.
Are both colourways (Standard and Blue) the same board?
Yes — same shape, same construction, same performance. The Blue colourway is just an alternative finish for those who want something a bit different on the water. Both are available across all three sizes and carry the same two-year warranty.
