Description

The AFS D-Lite Boom is the same featherlight, rider-friendly wing foil wing as the standard D-Lite — only this version is built from the ground up to accept AFS's proprietary clip-on carbon boom. It's the lightweight, accessible wing for riders who've discovered that boom riding feels more connected, more intuitive and more fun than soft handles. You get all the D-Lite's famous ease of use with the direct, locked-in feel of a proper carbon boom.

Developed in collaboration with Axel Gérard (Vice-Champion Surf Freestyle GWA) and Alan Fédit, and validated throughout the 2024 GWA World Tour, the D-Lite Boom's clip-on system is a genuinely clever piece of engineering. The narrow-diameter 100% carbon boom clips securely onto the strut and is interchangeable across all wing sizes in the 2025 AFS range — so if you own multiple D-Lite Boom wings, one boom covers the lot. It also shares compatibility with the Diamond V2's rigid grip system, giving you flexibility across the AFS line-up.

Who It's For

The D-Lite Boom suits two kinds of rider particularly well. First: beginners and intermediates who've tried boom riding and found it dramatically easier to control power, steer precisely and manage the wing in choppy or gusty conditions. Second: more experienced freeride and freestyle riders who want a lightweight, compact boom wing that handles brilliantly without carrying the weight or price tag of a higher-performance option. It's also a smart choice for anyone upgrading from soft handles for the first time — the boom's intuitive feedback makes progression noticeably faster.

Key Features

  • AFS proprietary CLIP-ON boom system — secure attachment, fast removal, no tools needed
  • 100% carbon narrow-diameter boom for ultra-low weight and high stiffness
  • Boom interchangeable across all AFS 2025 wing sizes — one boom fits your whole quiver
  • Cross-compatible with Diamond V2 rigid grips (boom sold separately or bundled)
  • Same lightweight Dyneema and X-Ply canopy construction as the standard D-Lite
  • Compact wingtip design to prevent tip-catch during learning
  • Tested and approved by professional riders throughout the GWA World Tour 2024
  • Includes wrist leash and repair kit as standard
  • Available in 3.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 / 6.0m² — with or without the clip-on boom

How It Flies

The boom transforms the D-Lite's character without changing what makes it great. The wing's smooth, progressive power delivery and forgiving canopy remain exactly as they are, but with a boom in your hands you gain a much more direct connection to the wing's trim. Steering inputs translate immediately — you sheet in with your whole grip rather than a couple of fingers on a handle — and holding a consistent angle of attack becomes effortless. Many riders find their upwind efficiency improves immediately on switching to a boom, and transitions become cleaner when you're not shuffling hand positions on soft handles.

Setup & Handling

If you choose the 'with boom' variant, the clip-on boom arrives pre-sized and ready to attach. Clip it onto the strut, check the locking points are engaged, inflate the wing through the standard valve, and you're ready. The CLIP-ON system is quick and reliable — AFS designed it to work with wet, cold hands in real-world conditions rather than just on the bench at a trade show. If you choose 'without boom', the wing mounts the same attachment points and you can add any compatible AFS carbon boom later. Either way, inflation is fast and the wing packs down to the same compact bag as the standard D-Lite.

Construction

The D-Lite Boom shares the same Dyneema laminate and X-Ply canopy construction as the standard D-Lite, delivering that signature combination of light weight and robust durability. The boom attachment points on the strut are reinforced to handle the concentrated loads that come from boom riding rather than distributed handle grips. The 100% carbon boom tube is kept intentionally narrow in diameter — this reduces weight significantly versus alloy alternatives and improves the ergonomic feel in the hands, giving better feedback from the wing's load without the visual bulk of a larger tube.

Size Guide

Size (m²) Best Wind Range Rider / Use
3.0 18–26 knots Light riders or intermediate–advanced in powered conditions
4.0 15–22 knots Versatile all-rounder; great first boom wing for many riders
5.0 12–18 knots Lighter winds and heavier riders; freeride and light-wind SUP
6.0 10–15 knots Light-wind specialist; maximise foil time in marginal UK breeze

Pairs Well With

Find matching foils and hardware in the full AFS range. Mount the D-Lite Boom over a stable, volume-friendly wing foil board and add a wing foil harness once you're riding — boom wings and harnesses work brilliantly together for longer sessions. A proper wetsuit rounds out your kit for year-round riding on the Wirral and beyond.

Why We Stock It

We stock the D-Lite Boom because boom wings have genuinely changed how a lot of people experience wing foiling — and the D-Lite Boom brings that change at an accessible price without any compromise on build quality. The AFS clip-on system is elegant and practical, the carbon boom feels immediately right in the hands, and the fact that one boom covers your entire AFS quiver is the kind of smart thinking that keeps costs down as you build more wings over time. It's a wing we recommend with real confidence.

FAQs

What is the difference between the D-Lite Wing and the D-Lite Boom Wing?

The standard D-Lite uses soft foam handles, while the D-Lite Boom is specifically designed to use AFS's clip-on carbon boom. The canopy construction, sizes and performance character are the same — the difference is in how you hold and control the wing. The boom provides a more direct, connected grip that many riders find improves control, upwind efficiency and overall progression speed.

Is the boom included, or do I need to buy it separately?

Here at Northern Watersports we offer the D-Lite Boom in two variants: 'With Boom' (includes the clip-on carbon boom) and 'Without Boom' (the wing only, for riders who already own a compatible AFS boom or want to add one later). Select your preferred option from the variant menu above.

Can I use the D-Lite Boom's boom on my other AFS wings?

Yes — the AFS clip-on carbon boom is interchangeable across all wing sizes in the 2025 AFS range. If you own a Diamond V2 as well, the boom is cross-compatible with its rigid grip attachment points too. One boom genuinely covers your whole AFS quiver.

Is the D-Lite Boom good for beginners?

Yes, provided you're comfortable with the basic concept of boom riding. Many riders actually find learning on a boom easier than soft handles, because the consistent grip position and direct steering feedback simplify the control inputs. If you're a complete beginner unsure whether to start with handles or boom, come and chat to us at the shop — we're happy to help you decide.

What wind range does the D-Lite Boom cover?

Across all four sizes (3.0–6.0m²), the D-Lite Boom covers approximately 10–26 knots. A 4.0 and a 5.0 together covers the majority of typical UK wing foiling conditions. For a single-wing quiver, the 4.0m² is the most versatile for most UK riders.

How does the clip-on boom attach? Is it secure?

The AFS CLIP-ON system uses purpose-designed attachment points built into the D-Lite Boom's strut. The boom clips into place with a positive locking action and is designed to be operated with wet or gloved hands. It's been tested in competition conditions throughout the 2024 GWA World Tour and has proven to be reliable and secure in real riding scenarios.
