Description

The AFS Dockstar is a carbon prepreg dock-start board built for riders who want the most direct, performance-oriented dock-starting experience possible. At 83cm long, 38.5cm wide, and just 7 litres of volume, this is an extreme tool — ultra-light at 1.75kg, supremely stiff, and engineered to get experienced dock-starters on the foil with zero wasted energy. AFS uses the same carbon prepreg construction and Corecell core here as in their top-end performance race and surf gear.

This is the board for dock-start foiling when you've already got the technique and you want to stop being limited by your equipment. The Dockstar doesn't forgive hesitation — but for committed dock-starters, it's transformative.

Who It's For

The Dockstar is built for experienced foilers who are already confident with dock-start technique and want a more performance-oriented board than the SK8. It suits riders who are consistent at getting up from a dock and want to focus on maximising their pump efficiency, refining their foil control, and pushing their sessions further. It's not a first dock-start board — for that, the SK8 is the better choice. But if you've been dock-starting for a while and you want to feel what a purpose-optimised carbon tool is like underfoot, this is it.

Key Features

  • 83cm × 38.5cm, 7L, 1.75kg — one of the smallest, lightest dock-start boards available; minimal drag, maximum directness
  • Carbon prepreg construction + Corecell SAN core — same high-end materials as AFS's performance race boards; delivers exceptional rigidity and ultra-low weight
  • US double-rail box with fore-aft adjustment — fine-tune foil position for your size, skill level, and foil characteristics
  • EVA grip pad included — super-soft EVA with textured surface for confident foot placement during the critical launch phase
  • Glitter finish — distinctive AFS aesthetic, not just a performance board but a good-looking one
  • 2-year warranty — AFS stands behind their builds
  • Made in France — handbuilt in AFS's Pencran workshop, Brittany

Real-World Feel

Step off the dock with a Dockstar underfoot and you immediately feel the difference from a more conventional board. There's almost no mass to get moving — the 1.75kg weight means it responds to the slightest input. The carbon prepreg construction means there's absolutely no flex between your feet and the mast, so you feel every pump cycle with complete clarity. That directness is the point: at 7L, the board is barely floating you, which means you have to commit to the pop and the pump immediately. For riders with solid technique, that translates to faster, more efficient sessions. The EVA pad keeps your feet in place through aggressive pump cycles without the slipping you'd get on a bare deck.

Setup and Use

Because the Dockstar is a single-size board, setup is about getting your foil position right. AFS's US double-rail box gives you a meaningful range of fore-aft adjustment — move it forward if you're finding it hard to generate lift on take-off, back if you want a more direct feel once you're consistently getting up. The lower volume compared to the SK8 means the technique window for a successful dock start is narrower: you need to generate more momentum on the push-off and commit to the pump faster. If you're transitioning from the SK8, expect a session or two of recalibration. Once you're dialled in, the Dockstar's light weight and rigidity reward you with longer, more efficient pump runs.

Construction

The Dockstar uses carbon prepreg construction — layers of pre-impregnated carbon fibre cured under pressure and heat, the same method used in motorsport and aerospace for consistent, void-free laminates. The core is Corecell SAN (styrene-acrylonitrile) polymer foam — an advanced structural core material that offers better fatigue resistance and impact toughness than standard PVC, making it well-suited to the repetitive impact loading of dock starting. Every Dockstar is built entirely in-house at AFS's facility in Pencran, Brittany, and comes with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.

Pairs Well With

The Dockstar works with any foil using a standard US box plate-mount — AFS's own foil range fits perfectly, and the board is also compatible with most other mainstream foil brands. For pure dock-start and pump use, a moderate-to-high-aspect front wing suits the Dockstar's performance character well. If you're building or upgrading a complete dock-start setup, we can advise on foil and mast combinations for your weight and goals — just get in touch.

Why We Stock It

The Dockstar represents what we like most about AFS as a brand: they don't compromise. When they set out to build the best dock-start board they could, they used carbon prepreg and Corecell — the same materials as their race gear — because that's what the application demands. For our customers on the Wirral who've got their dock-start game sorted and want to push it further, the Dockstar is the obvious next step. It's not for everyone, but for the right rider it's a seriously capable piece of kit.

FAQs

Is the Dockstar suitable for beginners to dock starting?

No — the Dockstar is designed for experienced dock-starters who already have consistent technique. At 7L volume, it demands immediate commitment on the pop and pump, with very little margin for error. If you're new to dock starting, the AFS SK8 (16L) is the better starting point — it's larger, more forgiving, and still a very capable tool once you've found your feet.

What's the difference between the Dockstar and the SK8?

The Dockstar (83cm, 7L, 1.75kg) is smaller, lighter, and built from more performance-oriented materials (carbon prepreg + Corecell) than the SK8 (95cm, 16L, 2.5kg, PVC sandwich glass). The SK8 is larger, more versatile, and more forgiving — it suits a wider range of dock-start skill levels and can also be used for wake foiling and micro-surf. The Dockstar is a more focused, demanding tool for riders who are already consistent dock-starters and want maximum performance.

What foil box does the Dockstar use?

The Dockstar uses a US double-rail box with fore-aft adjustment. This is the most common foil mounting system and is compatible with AFS's own foil range as well as most other mainstream foils that use a standard plate-mount. If you're unsure whether your foil is compatible, send us the details and we'll check.

Does the Dockstar come with a grip pad?

Yes. The Dockstar comes with an EVA grip pad included — super-soft with a grippy textured surface. You don't need to buy a separate traction pad.

Can I use the Dockstar for wing foiling or kite foiling?

The Dockstar is not designed for wing foiling or kite foiling from a water start. It has no strap inserts and its 7L of volume is far too low for a water start with a wing or kite. It's a dedicated dock-start and pump tool. For wing foiling or kite foiling, see our broader range of boards.

Is it fragile given the carbon construction?

Carbon prepreg is very stiff but can be more sensitive to point impacts than glass. The Corecell core is specifically chosen for its impact toughness — it's used in race boards that take plenty of knocks. That said, treat it like any performance carbon board: avoid standing on the rails, protect it in transit, and check it regularly. AFS offer a 2-year warranty, and we're here to help if you ever need support with a warranty claim.
