Description
If you're taking your first foiling steps, the AFS Flyer is where to start. It's AFS's dedicated beginner front wing — built around large surface areas, a thick profile, and a low aspect ratio that together create the most generous, stable, forgiving foil in the range. The Flyer will get you in the air earlier, keep you there more easily, and give you the platform you need to develop your body position, balance, and control without the wing punishing every small mistake.
Available as a standalone front wing in 1500 cm² or 1800 cm², the Flyer is also sold as part of the AFS Flyer Full Set — a complete foil package including mast, fuselage, and stabiliser. If you're buying your first complete foil, the Full Set is worth considering. This listing is for the front wing only, suitable for riders who already have a compatible AFS foils setup and want to add the Flyer as a learning or light-wind option.
Who It's For
The Flyer is purpose-built for absolute beginners and early improvers. If you've never foiled before, or you've had a handful of lessons and want your own kit to practise on, this is the wing. The large surface area generates lift at very low speeds, which means you don't need much power in your wing or much board speed before you're airborne. Once you're up, the stable, forgiving character keeps you there without constant correction. It's also an excellent light-wind option for heavier riders who want a guaranteed way to get on foil in marginal conditions. Riders who've outgrown the Flyer typically move on to the AFS Evo range — the progression path is natural and well-mapped.
Key Features
- Two sizes: 1500 cm² and 1800 cm² — the 1800 offers maximum lift for heavier riders or very light wind
- Low aspect ratio (6.3 on both sizes) — wide, stable platform ideal for learning
- Thick profile for high lift generation at low speeds
- 1500: 1430 mm span, 185 mm max chord, 20 mm max thickness
- 1800: 1735 mm span, 205 mm max chord, 22 mm max thickness
- HR Carbon and Corecell construction — full carbon, not glass
- Fuselink mount — AFS's proprietary quick-connect system
- Smooth, progressive take-off — no sudden pitch or snap
- Lightweight for a wing of this size: both sizes 0.8 kg
On the Foil
The Flyer's character is best described as honest and patient. Point it into the wind, get some board speed going, and it lifts you off in a clean, gradual arc — no lurch, no sudden nose pitch, no moment where you feel like it's about to throw you. Once you're up, it settles into a stable glide that gives you time to think about your footing, your weight distribution, and where you're going rather than desperately fighting for balance. The thick profile generates lift across a wide range of speeds, which means if you hit a lull or lose a bit of momentum, the wing doesn't immediately drop out. It stays flying, and gives you the seconds you need to recover. That quality — the extra margin — is exactly what beginners need to build confidence quickly. The 1800 takes this even further, suitable for the heaviest riders and the lightest winds, while the 1500 is a slightly more responsive option for lighter riders or moderate conditions.
Compatibility & Setup
The Flyer front wing uses AFS's Fuselink mounting system — a proprietary connection that is not compatible with standard US Box, deep-tuttle, or any other brand's foil mount without an adapter. The wing attaches to the fuselage using three screws via the Fuselink interface. You need an AFS Fuselink-compatible fuselage and mast to run this wing. If you're starting from scratch, we recommend looking at the AFS Flyer Full Set which includes everything you need. If you already have a 2024-onwards AFS setup with the Fuselink fuselage, you can add this front wing directly. Older AFS Performer or Alpha masts (pre-2024) require the AFS Switch fuselage adapter. Not sure what you need? Drop us a message and we'll help you work it out.
Construction
AFS build their foils in France using HR (High-Resistance) Carbon over a Corecell foam core. This full carbon construction is notably different from entry-level glass-fibre foils — it's stiffer, lighter, and delivers more direct feedback, which actually makes learning easier, not harder. The Corecell core keeps weight down and absorbs vibration. At 0.8 kg for both the 1500 and 1800, these are remarkably light wings for their size, which helps with pumping efficiency and reduces fatigue.
Spec Table
| Size (cm²) | Span (mm) | Aspect Ratio | Max Chord | Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1500 | 1430 | 6.3 | 185 mm | 0.8 kg | Lighter beginners, moderate conditions, first flights |
| 1800 | 1735 | 6.3 | 205 mm | 0.8 kg | Heavier riders, very light wind, maximum stability |

Why We Stock It
The Flyer is the wing we recommend most often when a complete beginner asks what they should start on — and that recommendation is earned rather than default. It's a genuinely well-designed learner foil: full carbon quality at an accessible price point, extremely easy to fly, and part of a range you can grow with as your riding develops. AFS make it in France, build quality is consistent, and the Fuselink system means you can swap front wings as you progress without changing your entire setup. For anyone starting out in wing foiling on the Wirral or anywhere in the UK, it's one of the best ways to make first flights happen quickly.
FAQs
What's the difference between the Flyer front wing and the Flyer Full Set?
This listing is for the front wing only — the Flyer 1500 or 1800 cm² front wing, sold separately. The AFS Flyer Full Set is a complete foil package that includes the front wing, mast, fuselage, and stabiliser — everything you need to get on the water. If you're buying your first foil, the Full Set is what you want. This standalone front wing is for riders who already have a compatible AFS setup and want to add the Flyer wing to their quiver, or upgrade from a different AFS front wing.
How does the Flyer compare to the AFS Evo?
The Flyer is designed for first flights and early learning — low aspect ratio (6.3), thick profile, very high lift, maximum stability. The Evo has a thinner, more refined profile and a higher aspect ratio (7.5–8.1), making it faster, more manoeuvrable, and better gliding, but requiring more technique to fly well. Most riders graduate from the Flyer to the Evo 1450 or 1650 as they build confidence. The two wings are complementary — the Flyer gets you riding, the Evo keeps you progressing.
1500 or 1800 — which size should I start on?
For most beginners, the 1500 is the right starting point. It's large enough to generate lift early and forgive minor technique errors, while being slightly easier to handle on the water and in the air than the 1800. The 1800 is best suited to heavier riders (generally over 90 kg), those learning in very light winds, or anyone who wants absolute maximum stability and the most generous lift possible. If in doubt about which size suits your weight and local conditions, contact us and we'll give you a straight answer.
Will the Flyer front wing fit my existing foil setup?
The Flyer uses AFS's Fuselink mounting system — a proprietary interface that is not compatible with US Box, deep-tuttle, or other brands' systems without an adapter. You need an AFS Fuselink-compatible fuselage. If you have an older AFS Performer or Alpha mast (pre-2024), you'll need the AFS Switch fuselage to bridge compatibility. If you're building a new setup, you'll need a compatible AFS mast and Fuselink fuselage alongside this wing. We can help you spec the right complete package.
Is the Flyer suitable for kite foiling or SUP foiling, or just wing foiling?
The Flyer is primarily designed for wing foiling, where its high lift and stability are a perfect match for learners using a wing to generate power. Its large surface area and thick profile also make it workable for SUP foiling in gentle conditions. It's less suited to kite foiling, where the dynamics of lift generation are different and more specialised wings are typically used. For wing foiling beginners, it's excellent.
Is carbon construction a good choice for a beginner foil?
Yes. There's sometimes an assumption that beginners should start on glass-fibre foils and upgrade later, but carbon actually makes learning easier. It's lighter, which means less drag when pumping and less fatigue. It's stiffer, which gives cleaner, more predictable feedback from the wing. And the AFS Flyer's HR Carbon/Corecell construction means you're learning on something that won't let you down as you improve. The Flyer Full Set is one of the most cost-effective ways to start foiling on full-quality carbon kit.
