Description

The name says everything you need to know. The AFS Get Up 9'5 is the biggest, most stable wing foil board in the AFS line-up — an enormous, confidence-first platform built specifically to make the learning process as short and as enjoyable as possible. It's for people who want to get up on the foil and start flying, not spend weeks falling in.

At 9'5 in length with a correspondingly generous volume, the Get Up sits high in the water, gives you bags of time to position yourself, and makes water-starts dramatically easier than a conventional short wing board. AFS built this for complete beginners, wing schools and anyone who has tried and struggled on smaller, less forgiving shapes.

Who It's For

The Get Up 9'5 is aimed at complete beginners to wing foiling — riders who have never foiled before, or who have had a go but found the standard-size boards too unstable to make progress. It's equally well-suited to wing schools and hire fleets where you need a board that every student can manage regardless of their size, balance or fitness. If you already have a few hours on the foil and are comfortable getting up consistently, you may find you outgrow it quickly — but for those early sessions, nothing gets you flying faster.

Key Features

  • 9'5 high-volume platform — exceptional stability at rest and during the critical take-off window, giving you time to position properly before committing
  • Supremely stable for water-starts — the generous length and volume make getting to your feet and powering up the wing far more forgiving than a standard wing board
  • Beginner-optimised rocker and outline — the shape is tuned for early take-off and predictable behaviour in the air, not for hard carving or high-performance riding
  • Foil box compatible — fitted with a US double-rail foil box system for maximum compatibility with AFS and other major foil brands
  • Strap inserts — footstrap inserts allow you to add straps as your confidence grows, bridging the gap between early learning and more committed riding
  • Wood-epoxy sandwich construction — built in AFS's double-shell mould process using biosourced GreenPoxy resin (33%+ plant-derived molecules) for consistent quality and durability in a school/hire environment
  • School and hire ready — robust enough for repeated use, easy to handle on the beach, and stable enough for riders of a wide range of sizes and abilities

Real-World Feel

Your first session on the Get Up will be defined by how little you have to think about balance. The volume and length give you a stable platform to stand on while you sort your wing out, get your stance right and wait for a gust — all the things that happen simultaneously and make learning winging so overwhelming on a shorter board. When you do take off, the foil lifts earlier and more progressively than it would on a smaller shape, because the board is moving through the water with less drag fighting it. Falls are softer, recoveries are quicker, and the progression curve is noticeably steeper. By the end of a session on the Get Up, most beginners have achieved their first proper flight. That's what this board is for.

Setup & Fit

The Get Up 9'5 is sold as a board only — you'll need a foil, wing and leash separately. For pairing, we'd recommend an AFS beginner foil setup with a high-lift front wing (the AFS Flyer 1500 or 1800 are classics for early learning) and a mast in the 70–80 cm range to keep the risk of breach-crashes manageable. For wings, a 4–5 m wing suits most conditions in the UK when you're learning — enough power to get going but not so much that it pulls you over. Speak to us and we'll build you a learning package to suit your weight and local conditions.

Construction

AFS manufacture their boards in Brittany using a wood-epoxy sandwich construction process. All fabric layers, structural reinforcements and foil/strap boxes are applied in a double-shell mould and co-cured together — giving precise, repeatable shapes and a solid, confidence-inspiring feel underfoot. The resin is AFS's biosourced SR GreenPoxy, formulated with more than 33% plant-derived molecules. The result is a board that's light enough to carry easily, tough enough to survive the learning process, and honest in its environmental credentials.

Size Guide

Size Best for
9'5 Complete beginners, wing schools, riders who want maximum stability for their first sessions

Note: The Get Up 9'5 is the only size in this model. Once you're consistently getting up and flying, the natural progression is to a shorter, lower-volume wing board.

Pairs Well With

  • AFS Flyer foil — high-lift beginner foil; a natural match for the Get Up
  • 4–5 m wing — ideal learning size for most UK conditions and rider weights
  • 5/4 mm wetsuit — essential for UK water year-round; you'll be in the water a lot while learning
  • Impact vest and helmet — recommended for beginners; foil tips are unforgiving

Why We Stock It

We run wingfoil lessons from the Wirral and we know better than most what makes the difference in those first few sessions. A board that's too small, too unstable or too technical kills enthusiasm fast. The AFS Get Up is the opposite — it's designed by people who understand the learning process and have built a board that removes the unnecessary barriers. At £1,869 it's a proper board with proper construction, not a cheap hollow-plastic compromise. For schools, it's a fleet asset that will last. For individual learners, it's the fastest, least frustrating route to your first flight — and from there the sky (literally) is the limit.

FAQs

Is the AFS Get Up 9'5 only for complete beginners?

It's designed with beginners squarely in mind, but it's also an excellent school and hire board for more experienced instructors who need to demonstrate technique on a stable platform. Most riders will progress to a shorter board within a season — but for the learning phase, nothing gets you flying faster.

What foil should I use with the Get Up 9'5?

The Get Up is compatible with any foil using a US double-rail box system. For beginners we recommend an AFS Flyer foil with a high-lift front wing (1500 or 1800 cm²) — these generate lift early and fly at slow speeds, which is exactly what you need when you're learning. A 70–80 cm mast length keeps crashes less dramatic. Get in touch and we'll put together a matched package.

Does the AFS Get Up 9'5 come with a foil and wing?

No — the Get Up is sold as a board only. You'll need to purchase a foil, wing and leash separately. We carry a full range of AFS foils and wings — speak to us and we can help you put together a complete learning package.

How does the Get Up 9'5 compare to a standard wing foil board?

A standard beginner wing board typically sits in the 5'8–7'4 range at 90–130 litres. The Get Up at 9'5 is considerably larger — giving you far more stability at rest, a much more forgiving take-off window, and more time to get your feet into position before the foil lifts. The trade-off is that it's larger to transport and won't perform well once you're an established rider, but for the learning phase the difference in progression is significant.

Can I use the Get Up 9'5 for kitesurfing or SUP foiling?

The Get Up is optimised for wing foiling — it's the intended and best use. Given its size and volume it could work for SUP foiling in theory, but it's not shaped or boxed for it. For kitesurfing-specific foil boards, see our foil boards category.

Is the AFS Get Up 9'5 suitable for heavier riders?

Yes — the high volume makes the Get Up particularly well-suited to heavier riders who would otherwise need a very large board to get the necessary float and stability. Riders up to around 110 kg and above will find the Get Up comfortable for learning. Speak to us if you're unsure — rider weight is one of the key factors in choosing the right board volume.
