Description
The AFS Kool 10'5 is AFS's answer to the allround paddleboard — a big, stable, confidence-inspiring platform that does everything without asking much back. At 320 cm long, 83 cm wide and pushing 210 litres of volume, it floats high, tracks straight and lets you focus on the fun rather than the balancing act.
Whether you're introducing a partner to paddling, taking the kids out on a calm estuary, or just want a relaxed cruise along the Wirral coast, the Kool earns its name. It's also tough enough for the odd surf session and light enough to carry to the water solo — a genuinely do-everything board that earns its place in any quiver.
Who It's For
The Kool 10'5 is aimed squarely at beginners and recreational paddlers who want maximum stability and zero fuss. It's a brilliant first SUP for adults or older teenagers, a capable family hire/demo board, or a sensible addition to a surf school's fleet. If you're returning to paddling after a break, or you simply want something forgiving on days when the conditions aren't perfect, the Kool delivers.
Key Features
- 210 litres / 10'5 x 32" allround shape — generous volume and beam keep it stable for a huge range of rider sizes and abilities
- Raised nose rocker — lifts the bow through chop and small waves so you're not constantly getting wet feet
- Round pin tail — balances straight-line tracking with easy turning; responsive without being twitchy
- Flat hull with progressive double concave — smooth, efficient glide on flat water; the concave softens the ride through ripple and chop
- Integrated windsurf mast foot insert — bolt on a sail rig and you've got a capable WindSUP; great for schools and versatile paddlers
- Biosourced GreenPoxy epoxy resin — more than 33% plant-derived molecules; AFS's commitment to lower-impact construction
- Wood-epoxy sandwich construction — the wood core gives a lively, responsive feel underfoot while keeping weight reasonable
Real-World Feel
Step on the Kool and you'll immediately notice the planted, reassuring stability that comes from 83 cm of width. At 210 litres, even a heavier rider floats with plenty of freeboard, making the early sessions far less daunting. The flat hull glides efficiently with each stroke and the round tail pivots easily for course corrections. In small, clean surf it's fun rather than terrifying — the raised nose helps you pick your way through the break, and the tail lets you do a lazy cutback without too much effort. It's not a performance touring board or a wave machine, but that's not the point — the Kool does the everyday stuff brilliantly.
Setup & Fit
The Kool comes as a board; you'll need a paddle, leash and fin (standard centre fin box). A three-piece adjustable paddle suits most family use cases. If you want to windsurf it, you'll need a compatible sail rig with a standard Chinook or Euro-pin mast base — ask us and we'll point you in the right direction. For riders between roughly 60–100 kg wanting a relaxed, stable experience, the 10'5 is the pick. Heavier riders or those wanting more room should consider a longer/wider option.
Construction
AFS (and their SUP brand Nahskwell) build the Kool using a wood-epoxy sandwich process in a double-shell mould. All fabric layers, reinforcements and fin/mast boxes are applied and then co-cured in a single process — this approach ensures consistent quality, accurate reproduction of the shape and an optimal weight-to-strength ratio. The resin system is AFS's biosourced SR GreenPoxy, which contains more than 33% plant-derived molecules. The result is a board that is durable enough for school use, light enough to carry solo, and honest in its environmental impact.
Size Guide
| Size | Length | Width | Volume | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10'5 | 320 cm | 83 cm (32") | 210 L | Beginners, families, casual cruising, 60–100 kg riders |
Pairs Well With
- Wetsuit — UK water is cold; even in summer a 3/2 short-arm is sensible
- Adjustable three-piece SUP paddle — essential; pick one suited to rider height
- SUP ankle leash — coiled leash keeps it out of the way while paddling flat water
- AFS foils and accessories — if you later want to explore wing foiling, AFS makes the upgrade path easy
Why We Stock It
Northern Watersports is a rider-owned shop and we stock what we actually rate. AFS have been building foil and SUP gear in Brittany since 2009 and the Kool is a genuine workhorse — well-built, sensibly priced and honest about what it's for. At £999 it's not a budget hollow-plastic board, and it's not pretending to be. It's a proper, durable board that will last years of regular use and make learning to paddle far more enjoyable than fighting an unstable, tippy shape. We stock it because it does exactly what it says on the tin.
FAQs
Is the AFS Kool 10'5 suitable for complete beginners?
Yes — it's one of the most beginner-friendly rigid boards we carry. At 210 litres and 83 cm wide it offers outstanding stability, and the forgiving allround shape means you can focus on paddling technique rather than staying upright. If you've never paddled before, this is an excellent choice.
Can I use the Kool 10'5 for windsurfing as well as paddling?
Yes. The Kool has an integrated windsurf mast foot insert built into the deck, so you can fit a compatible sail rig and turn it into a WindSUP. You'll need a mast base, mast, boom and sail; the board does not include these. Ask us if you need help choosing a matching rig.
What weight rider does the AFS Kool 10'5 suit?
At 210 litres, the Kool 10'5 comfortably floats riders from around 60 kg up to roughly 100–110 kg for recreational paddling. Lighter beginners will find it very stable; heavier riders will still have ample freeboard for a confidence-inspiring session on flat water.
Is the Kool 10'5 a foil board?
No — the Kool is a pure paddleboard/SUP. It does not have a foil box and is not designed for wing foiling or SUP foiling. If you're looking for a board to go with a foil setup, take a look at our wing foil boards range.
What fin setup does the Kool use?
The Kool uses a standard single centre fin box (US box). A fin is included. The wide, stable shape means you don't need anything exotic — the standard fin gives you all the tracking and directional stability you need for flatwater and light surf.
How does the Kool compare to an inflatable SUP?
The rigid Kool offers noticeably better glide, more precise tracking and a livelier, more responsive feel underfoot than a similarly sized inflatable. The trade-off is that it's harder to transport and store. If you have roof rack access and somewhere to keep it, a rigid board like the Kool is the better paddling experience — particularly for anyone planning to use it regularly or progress their skills.
