Description
The AFS Single Foil Mid Length is built for riders who want the advantages of a mid-length — early take-off, effortless glide, light-wind reach — in a compact, no-nonsense package. Shorter and more focused than AFS's larger downwind shapes, it pairs the mid-length's ease of flight with a size that's genuinely manageable for solo beach launches, transport on the roof and sessions in tighter conditions. It's an honest, capable board that gets out of the way and lets you foil.
Available from AFS in two sizes — 5'4 and 5'8 — the Single Foil Mid Length is the accessible entry point into AFS's mid-length board family. If you've been riding a large beginner board and want to step forward without going straight to a high-performance shape, this is a well-considered next move. It's also a smart second board for riders who already own a larger downwind or light-wind shape and want something more transportable for day-to-day wing foiling.
Who It's For
Discipline: Wingfoiling, light-wind freeride
Level: Progressing intermediate
Best for: Riders stepping up from a full-size beginner board, lighter riders who want mid-length glide without excess volume, anyone wanting a compact but forgiving wing foil board
Key Features
- Mid-length outline in a compact package — the length creates genuine glide and early flight without the bulk of a full downwind shape
- Two sizes: 5'4 and 5'8 — accessible volume range to suit different rider weights and progression stages
- Concave deck — lowers your centre of gravity for a connected, controlled feel underfoot
- Light-wind capable — the shape gets onto the foil early, making the most of marginal UK conditions
- Single foil track setup — clean, focused design without unnecessary complexity
- Transportable size — easier to handle solo on the beach, fits standard roof racks and travel bags
- EVA deck pad — comfortable grip and touchdown protection from the first session
Real-World Feel
The Single Foil Mid Length sits in a useful gap between the big, stable beginner boards and the fully performance-focused Blackbird. It's not a nervous, demanding shape — the mid-length outline keeps take-offs smooth and unhurried — but it's compact enough that once you're flying it rewards you with a more connected, nimble feel than a 7'+ board ever will. On light-wind days it earns its place: the glide means less pumping, less fighting the wing, fewer crashes. On more powered days it's direct and satisfying. This is a board that builds your riding rather than doing it for you.
Setup & Fit
The 5'8 is the better starting point for most riders stepping off a full-size beginner board — the extra length gives you a little more paddling stability and time to find your position before the foil takes over. The 5'4 suits lighter riders or those who are already confident on a mid-volume board and want a sharper, more manoeuvrable feel. If you're unsure, err on the longer option — you'll progress onto the smaller size faster than you think, but you'll have more fun in the meantime. Drop us a message and we'll help you choose.
Construction
The AFS Single Foil Mid Length uses AFS's proven closed-mould sandwich construction with an EPS core and PVC reinforcement in key load-bearing areas. The lay-up delivers a consistent board from batch to batch — predictable flex, reliable strength and a finish that holds up to regular use. The concave deck and foil housings are integrated in the moulding process for accuracy and longevity.
Pairs Well With
- AFS foils and wings — pair with an AFS foil for seamless track compatibility and a matched performance level
- Wetsuits — the UK season demands a good 4/3 or 5/4; Northern Watersports stocks a full range
- Wing foil harnesses — even on shorter sessions a waist harness makes a real difference to arm fatigue
- Helmets and impact vests — worth having when you're pushing your limits on a new board
Why We Stock It
We stock the AFS Single Foil Mid Length because it fills a genuine gap in the progression ladder. There are plenty of big, safe beginner boards and plenty of high-performance shapes for experienced riders — but the transition between the two is where a lot of riders stall. This board bridges that gap well: it's not intimidating, it doesn't hold you back, and it gives you the mid-length experience without the price tag or bulk of the full Blackbird range. At Northern Watersports we care about riders getting better, not just spending more — and this board fits that philosophy perfectly.
FAQs
What makes this a "mid-length" board?
Mid-length refers to the board's length-to-width ratio and overall outline philosophy — longer than a typical high-performance wing board but shorter than a full downwind or SUP shape. That extra length creates paddling glide and an earlier, smoother foil take-off, while the width and rocker balance are tuned to keep the board manageable. It's the sweet spot between volume-for-stability and length-for-glide.
How does the Single Foil Mid Length compare to the Blackbird Mid Length?
The Blackbird Mid Length is AFS's premium mid-length shape — a proven, race-developed design available in both carbon and fibreglass, aimed at riders who want maximum performance across wingfoil, downwind and surf foil. The Single Foil Mid Length is a more focused, accessible option at a lower price point, designed to deliver the key mid-length benefits — early take-off, efficient glide — without the performance complexity of the Blackbird's hull. Think of it as the right board for riders who are building into mid-length territory, rather than those who are already there.
Which size should I choose: 5'4 or 5'8?
For most riders making the move from a larger beginner board, the 5'8 is the sensible starting point — a bit more float and a bit more time before the foil engages. Lighter riders (roughly under 70–75 kg) or those already comfortable on lower-volume boards will often find the 5'4 the better fit for how it handles once you're flying. If you're on the boundary, message us — it's worth a two-minute conversation before you commit.
Can I use the Single Foil Mid Length for downwind SUP foiling?
It's primarily a wingfoil board — the sizes (5'4 and 5'8) are compact for paddling into swell without a wing. You can SUP foil on it in the right conditions, but it's not optimised for paddle downwind in the way the larger Whitebird sizes are. If downwind SUP foiling is your main interest, we'd point you towards the Whitebird 7'8 or 8'2 instead.
What foil is compatible with the AFS Single Foil Mid Length?
The board uses an AFS foil track system. AFS foils connect natively, and many third-party foils with compatible base formats can also be used. If you're pairing it with a non-AFS foil, check your mast base format before ordering. Message us with your foil details and we'll confirm compatibility.
Is this board suitable for someone on their very first sessions?
It's a step up from a true beginner board rather than a starting point. If you've never foiled before, you'll almost certainly have more fun and progress faster on something larger and more stable for your first few sessions. But if you've had a handful of lessons and want to own your first board, the 5'8 is achievable. Come and talk to us — we'll give you an honest read on where you're at and what's right for you.
