Description

The High-Aspect Stabiliser Built for Glide and Pumping

The AFS U Glide Stabiliser is a different beast from the surf-oriented rear wings in the range. Where the U Surf and U Carve are compact and pivoty, the U Glide is long, narrow, and engineered for one thing above all else: efficiency. With an aspect ratio of 13.7 and a slender carbon profile, this is the rear wing you reach for when the front wing is high-aspect and the goal is maximum glide — downwind runs, pumping between sets, light wind range extension, or simply getting the most out of every stroke.

Three span sizes — 39, 41, and 43 cm — scale the U Glide's performance to suit different rider weights and AFS foils front wing combinations. The naming convention here refers to span (wingspan) in centimetres, not surface area: the UG39 measures 390 mm tip to tip, the UG41 410 mm, and the UG43 430 mm. Surface area on the UG41 is approximately 123 cm².

Who It's For

The U Glide is built for wing foilers, downwind foilers, and SUP foilers who are running high-aspect front wings and want the rear wing to match that efficiency focus. It is the natural partner for the AFS Ultra HA, AFS Silk HA, and AFS Enduro front wings, and is also compatible across the broader AFS range. It suits intermediate to advanced riders who are comfortable managing a more reactive pitch feel — high-aspect stabs are efficient but less forgiving than compact surf stabs, so some foil time is advisable before stepping into the UG39.

Key Features

  • Three span sizes: 39 / 41 / 43 cm (UG39 / UG41 / UG43)
  • UG41 specs: surface area ~123 cm², span 410 mm, aspect ratio 13.7
  • Ultra-high aspect ratio profile optimised for pumping efficiency and glide
  • Slender carbon section minimises drag at speed and between pumps
  • High-modulus carbon construction — exceptional stiffness, low weight
  • Compatible with AFS Fuselink system — fits all current AFS fuselages
  • Compatible with Ultra HA, Silk HA, and Enduro front wing ranges
  • Supplied with screws and protective cover
  • 100% made in France

On the Foil

Pair the U Glide 41 with an AFS Enduro 900 and the difference from a standard surf stab is immediate — the foil carries between pumps rather than dropping, and you find yourself covering more ground for the same effort. That's the U Glide doing its job. The narrow profile creates almost no drag between strokes, and the high aspect ratio means it generates efficient lift without needing much angle of attack. Once you're moving, you stay moving.

The 39 is the most demanding — narrowest span, sharpest pitch response, suits lighter riders or those wanting maximum performance out of fast front wings. The 41 is the recommended starting point for most riders on mid-size high-aspect setups. The 43 adds a little more lift area and is a good match for heavier riders or larger front wings where you want the stab to keep pace with the front wing's lift.

Compatibility and Setup

The U Glide connects to any AFS fuselage via the Fuselink system — two M6 screws, no adaptor required on current fuselages. Pre-2023 Alpha and Performer mast users will need the 2024 AFS Switch Fuselage. The Fuselink system allows the stabiliser position to be adjusted forward or back on the fuselage to fine-tune pitch balance — important when pairing high-aspect stabs with high-aspect front wings, as the pitch sensitivity is higher than in standard setups.

Recommended front wing pairings: AFS Ultra HA range, AFS Silk HA range, AFS Enduro 700–1300. Also works with the standard Silk range where riders want more glide than a Silk stab provides.

Construction

The U Glide is built in full high-modulus carbon at AFS's facility in France. The thin, high-aspect profile demands a particularly stiff layup — any flex in the wing at this aspect ratio translates directly to inefficiency. AFS uses carbon pre-preg throughout, with a layup schedule designed to maximise stiffness at the span while keeping weight as low as possible.

Size Guide

Size (span) Span Best For
UG39 390 mm Lighter riders, fast high-aspect setups, maximum performance, experienced foilers
UG41 410 mm Most riders — best all-round match for mid-size HA front wings, downwind and pumping
UG43 430 mm Heavier riders, larger HA front wings, more lift area, long-distance downwind

Why We Stock It

If you're already on a high-aspect front wing and still running a standard surf stab, you're leaving glide on the table. The U Glide is the upgrade that makes the rest of your high-aspect setup work as intended — less drag between pumps, more carry between waves, and a noticeable improvement in light wind performance. It's a specialist tool, but if it fits your riding, the difference is tangible from the first session.

FAQs

What do the U Glide size numbers mean — 39, 41, 43?

The numbers refer to the span (wingspan) of the stabiliser in centimetres — so the UG39 has a 390 mm wingspan, the UG41 is 410 mm, and the UG43 is 430 mm. This is different from the U Surf and U Carve naming convention, which uses surface area in cm². The UG41 has a surface area of approximately 123 cm² with an aspect ratio of 13.7.

Is the U Glide the same as the Ultra Glide?

Yes — the U Glide and Ultra Glide refer to the same stabiliser. AFS has used both names across different markets and time periods. The UG41 (U Glide 41 / Ultra Glide 41) is the most widely available and best-documented size, with confirmed specs of 123 cm² surface area, 410 mm span, and 13.7 aspect ratio.

What's the difference between the U Glide and the U Carve or U Surf?

The U Surf and U Carve are compact, lower-aspect stabilisers tuned for surf feel, pivot, and turning performance. The U Glide is a high-aspect stabiliser — narrower, longer, and optimised for glide and pumping efficiency. It creates less drag and carries more speed between pumps, but is less manoeuvrable and more pitch-sensitive than the surf stabs. Choose U Glide for downwind and pumping; choose U Surf or U Carve for wave riding and carving.

Which front wings is the U Glide compatible with?

The U Glide is confirmed compatible with the AFS Ultra HA, Silk, and Enduro ranges, and fits any AFS Fuselink or EVO fuselage. It works best when paired with high-aspect front wings, where the rear wing's efficiency character is matched by the front wing. Using it with a larger, lower-aspect front wing is possible but may not feel as balanced.

Is a high-aspect stabiliser harder to ride?

High-aspect stabs are more pitch-sensitive than compact surf stabs — small weight shifts have a more immediate effect on height. This makes them feel more demanding initially, but once you're used to the pitch response, they become intuitive. If you're new to high-aspect foiling, the UG43 is the more forgiving starting point, with a touch more lift area to smooth out the learning curve.

Does the U Glide work for wing foiling or is it purely for downwind?

The U Glide works very well for wing foiling, particularly in light wind conditions where efficiency matters most — helping you stay on foil at lower speeds and glide further between gusts. It also suits wing foilers who enjoy pumping out of jibes or carves to maintain speed. For pure carving and surf wing foiling, the U Carve is the better fit.
