Description

The AFS Ultra is the brand's flagship high-aspect front wing — a wing built entirely around the twin obsessions of glide and pump efficiency. Conceived by designer Laurent Borgna and developed in collaboration with elite downwind riders, it sits at the performance end of the AFS foils range and represents some of the most focused engineering in the high-aspect foiling world.

Available in 600, 750 and 900 cm², the Ultra covers a span of use cases from expert-level downwind racing through to serious pump training and efficient freeride. Each size shares the same design DNA: ultra-high aspect ratio (the 750 sits at AR14), leading-edge tubercles for a progressive stall, swept planform for locking into ocean runners, and a removable Fuselink mount that keeps the system modular without sacrificing rigidity.

Who It's For

The Ultra is aimed at experienced foilers who have already found their feet on a mid-aspect wing and are ready to push for more glide, more pump efficiency and longer sustained runs. If you're getting into downwind SUP foiling, planning ocean crossings, chasing pump distance records, or you simply want to feel what a genuinely elite high-aspect setup rides like — this is the wing. It rewards smooth, committed input and punishes aggressive, choppy technique, so a reasonable base of foiling hours is strongly recommended before stepping into the 600 or 750.

Key Features

  • Ultra-high aspect ratio — 750 cm² at AR14; 600 and 900 proportionally matched to the same family
  • Full UHM (Ultra High Modulus) carbon construction for maximum stiffness-to-weight ratio
  • Leading-edge tubercles for progressive stall onset and improved lock into swell face bumps
  • Swept planform balances downwind efficiency with surprising roll-to-roll control
  • Mini winglets reduce tip vortex drag and improve directional stability at speed
  • Removable Fuselink mount — connects to AFS Fuselink fuselages and masts
  • 100% made in France

On the Foil

The Ultra's glide is the first thing you notice. At cruising pace, the wing barely asks anything of you — it simply carries momentum in a way that lower-aspect wings can't match. Pumping is where the design difference is most stark: the high-stiffness UHM construction transmits every stroke directly into forward motion, and the profile geometry keeps energy loss through each cycle genuinely low. Speed range is broad for a high-aspect wing, with the tubercles doing real work to delay stall at the low end while the swept tips keep things composed at pace.

Within the Ultra family, the 600 is the raciest option — fastest, most demanding, ideal for lighter riders (roughly under 75 kg) in well-established swell with some wind to assist. The 750 is the sweet spot of the range: enough area for a wider range of conditions and rider weights while retaining the AR14 efficiency advantage. The 900 brings the Ultra's character to heavier riders or lighter-wind days without sacrificing the core glide feel. Compared to the Enduro range, the Ultra is more specialised — it demands better conditions and better technique but pays dividends in glide distance and pump economy when the stars align.

Compatibility & Setup

The Ultra uses AFS's Fuselink connection system — a precision-machined conical interface that joins the front wing to the fuselage using just two M8 bolts. You'll need an AFS Fuselink fuselage (standard or short) and an AFS Fuselink-compatible mast (UHM, HM or HR variants). The system is not directly compatible with a standard US box without an adapter, and it is not interchangeable with other brands' connection systems. If you're coming from an older AFS Performer mast, the Switch fuselage allows you to transition to Fuselink wings without replacing the full setup. Speak to us at Northern Watersports and we'll make sure everything in your quiver lines up.

Construction

The Ultra is built from UHM (Ultra High Modulus) carbon prepreg — the stiffest carbon fibre grade available in sporting goods manufacture. The wing and mount are cured as a single structure, eliminating the flex that can occur at bolted joints in lesser designs. This monolithic rigidity is what allows the high-aspect planform to feel planted and predictable rather than twitchy. Manufacture is entirely in France under AFS quality control.

Spec Table

Size (cm²) Aspect Ratio Best For Price
600 Ultra-high (AR family) Expert downwind, racing, lighter riders (<75 kg), stronger wind/swell £759
750 AR14 Downwind, pump training, versatile expert use, mid-weight riders £819
900 Ultra-high (AR family) Downwind, heavier riders (>85 kg), lighter wind, maximum glide £949

Why We Stock It

We're a rider-owned shop on the Wirral and we pick the gear we'd ride ourselves. The AFS Ultra is genuinely one of the most technically advanced front wings on the market — and for the rider who's ready for it, the difference in glide and pump efficiency is night and day compared to a general-purpose wing. We stock it because it's the right tool for the right rider, and we can help you work out whether that's you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Ultra and the Enduro?

The Ultra is a specialist high-aspect wing optimised for glide distance and pump efficiency — its primary home is downwind foiling, pump training and fast freeride. The Enduro has a similar AR11 aspect ratio but is shaped for genuine all-round versatility: wing foiling, prone, SUP, downwind, learner-friendly. If you need one wing to do everything, the Enduro is the better answer. If glide and pump performance are your primary goals and you have the conditions and skill to use a high-aspect wing, the Ultra rewards that investment.

What does the removable mount mean in practice?

The Ultra's mount is separate from the wing body, meaning you can detach the fuselage connection point for transport or replacement without discarding the wing itself. It also means the system fits within the AFS Fuselink ecosystem — one fuselage, multiple compatible wings from across the AFS range.

Is the Ultra compatible with my existing foil setup?

The Ultra requires an AFS Fuselink fuselage and a Fuselink-compatible AFS mast. It is not compatible with a standard US box track without an adapter, and it will not bolt directly to non-AFS fuselages. If you have an older AFS Performer mast, the AFS Switch fuselage bridges the gap. Drop us a message and we'll confirm compatibility for your specific kit.

Which size should I choose for my weight?

As a rough guide: riders under 75 kg in well-established conditions will find the 600 accessible and fast. The 750 suits a broad range of 70–90 kg riders and handles mixed conditions well. The 900 suits heavier riders (85 kg+) or anyone wanting the most forgiving entry point into the Ultra's high-aspect character. Conditions matter as much as weight — in weak swell or flat water, size up.

Can I use the Ultra for wing foiling?

Technically yes, but it's not what it was designed for. The high aspect ratio and swept planform reward smooth, sustained input — exactly what downwind and pump foiling provide. In wing foiling the constant direction changes and power surges from a wing can feel unsettled on a very high-aspect setup. The Enduro range is a better choice if wing foiling is your main discipline.

What stabiliser works with the Ultra?

AFS's Glide 41 stabiliser is confirmed compatible with the Ultra HA range, as well as the Silk and Enduro ranges. AFS also offer the Ultra Glide stabiliser specifically tuned to match the Ultra's lift and glide characteristics. We can help pair the right stab to your chosen front wing size when you buy.
