Description
The AFS Whitebird is where accessible design meets genuine foiling performance. Built to get you up early and keep you riding through lulls, it draws on the same DNA as the legendary AFS Blackbird but packages it into an approachable, multi-discipline shape that works for wingfoiling, downwind and SUP foiling alike. If you're stepping up from beginner gear or looking for a board that earns its place on the roof rack whatever the forecast, the Whitebird is the one we keep coming back to.
Available in four sizes from 6'6 to 8'2, it covers a wide range of rider weights and conditions — from tight freeride sessions on the Mersey to longer downwind runs in open water. This is the board we put most progressing wing foil board riders on at Northern Watersports, and it's the one plenty of experienced riders keep on rotation for lighter days.
Who It's For
Discipline: Wingfoiling, downwind SUP foil, SUP surf foil
Level: Intermediate to advanced
Best for: Riders progressing beyond beginner boards, anyone wanting one board that does it all, bigger riders needing volume to get flying in marginal wind
Key Features
- Concave deck — lowers your centre of gravity, brings you closer to the foil and improves control through transitions
- Relaxed entry rocker — flat-ish through the nose for early take-off without burning energy in light breeze
- Advanced foil housings — AFS's own track system for precise mast placement and a secure, rattle-free connection to your foil
- T-shaped tail with reduced wetted surface — less drag at start-up, faster release onto the foil
- Dome deck profile — sheds water quickly after touchdowns rather than pooling underfoot
- Full EVA deck pad — grippy, comfortable, protects the board on landings
- Integrated carry handle — makes beach and dock launches far less awkward
- Four sizes (100L–145L) — something for every body weight and wind range
Real-World Feel
The Whitebird feels planted on the water before take-off — wide enough to stand on comfortably, long enough to paddle-up or pump into a run, but it doesn't drag once you're flying. The concave deck keeps your feet in the right place instinctively, and the advanced housings give a confident, locked-in feel rather than the vagueness you sometimes get on lesser boards. In light winds the generous volume does the work, and in stronger conditions the tail shape keeps release crisp. It's honest, predictable and rewarding — exactly what you want when the session gets technical.
Setup & Fit
As a rule of thumb, aim for a volume that's at least 30–40% more than your body weight in litres when you're still building confidence — so an 80 kg rider might target the 115L (6'8) as a first Whitebird, or step up to the 130L (7'8) if they're on lighter kit or windier sites. Bigger riders or anyone planning serious downwind sessions will appreciate the 8'2 at 145L. The 6'6 at 100L suits lighter riders or those already comfortable on mid-volume boards and wanting a more manoeuvrable option. If you're unsure, message us — we know these boards well.
Construction
The Whitebird uses a one-shot PVC sandwich glass construction over an EPS core, laminated with eco epoxy in a closed-mould process for consistent weight and a clean finish. PVC reinforcement is added in all load-bearing areas — the mast track zone, foot strap inserts and rails. The result is a board that's light enough to carry comfortably but tough enough for regular water use, hire fleets and the odd rough touchdown.
Size Guide
| Length | Width | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| 6'6 | 21" | 100L |
| 6'8 | 23" | 115L |
| 7'8 | 22" | 130L |
| 8'2 | 23" | 145L |
Pairs Well With
- AFS foils and wings — the Whitebird is designed around AFS's own foil track system, so foil fitment is seamless
- Wetsuits — UK water temps mean a 4/3 or 5/4 for most of the year on the Wirral
- Wing foil harnesses — a waist or seat harness takes the strain off your arms on longer sessions
- Helmets and impact vests — especially worth it while you're building confidence
Why We Stock It
We're rider-owned and rider-run, which means every board we carry has been put through its paces by us or our team before it goes on the shelves. The Whitebird earns its place because it's genuinely one of the most versatile wing foil boards we've ridden — it's not the flashiest piece of kit, but it's the one that consistently puts smiles on faces at the launch site. From complete beginners stepping off their first big trainer board to seasoned riders on light-wind dawn patrol, this board works. That's why we keep recommending it.
FAQs
What's the difference between the AFS Whitebird and the AFS Blackbird?
The Blackbird is AFS's high-performance shape — narrower, more progressive, aimed at intermediate-advanced riders who want maximum feel and efficiency. The Whitebird is built around the same hull principles but tuned for accessibility: more volume, a more forgiving rocker and a wider platform. Think of it as the Blackbird's more approachable sibling. If you're still progressing or want an easy-going light-wind board, the Whitebird is the better call.
Which Whitebird size should I choose for my weight?
As a starting point: under 70 kg — the 6'6 (100L) works well; 70–90 kg — the 6'8 (115L) is the sweet spot for most wingfoil use; 80–100 kg or anyone planning downwind sessions — the 7'8 (130L) gives you the extra float you'll appreciate; over 100 kg or committed downwind riders — the 8'2 (145L). These are guides, not rules — your skill level and wind range matter too. Drop us a message and we'll help you narrow it down.
Can I use the Whitebird for downwind SUP foiling?
Yes — the larger sizes (7'8 and 8'2 especially) are excellent downwind boards. The relaxed rocker gives good paddling glide, the volume helps you catch bumps earlier, and the tail shape releases cleanly once you're flying. The 6'6 and 6'8 are more suited to winging and light-wind freeride but can be paddled up in the right conditions.
What foil box system does the Whitebird use?
The Whitebird uses AFS's advanced foil housing system, which is compatible with AFS foil masts and bases. The track allows front-to-back mast position adjustment so you can dial in trim to suit your foil and riding style. If you're pairing with a non-AFS foil, check compatibility before buying — message us and we can advise.
Is the Whitebird good for beginners?
It's on the accessible end of intermediate boards rather than a true beginner board. If you're on your very first sessions, something with more volume and a wider outline will give you more time to find your feet. But if you've had a handful of lessons and can get up consistently, the Whitebird is a brilliant next step — it'll grow with you rather than holding you back.
How durable is the PVC sandwich glass construction?
It's a solid, real-world build. The closed-mould process gives even resin distribution and consistent wall thickness, and the PVC core adds impact resistance in the right areas. It's not indestructible — no board is — but it handles the day-to-day punishment of regular sessions, ding repairs well and travels without needing kid gloves. Many hire fleets run these boards, which tells you something.
