Description

The Mystic Star Floatation Vest Zipfree is a CE-certified 50N buoyancy aid built specifically for active watersports — a slim-profile, overhead-entry vest that stays out of your way whether you're hooked into a kite harness, paddling a SUP, or getting low on a wingfoil session.

Constructed with a 100% nylon outer shell over a PVC foam core, the Star Zipfree passes the EN ISO 12402-5 standard and delivers genuine 50 Newtons of buoyancy. The zipfree pullover design means no bulky front zip to press against your harness spreader bar, and no exposed teeth to catch on your wetsuit on a cold Wirral morning.

Who It's For

  • Disciplines: Kitesurfing, wingfoiling, pumpfoiling, SUP, windsurf
  • Level: All levels — from first-timers wanting mandatory buoyancy to seasoned riders who simply want a low-profile float vest that pairs with a harness
  • Best for: Anyone who needs CE-certified buoyancy without the bulk of a traditional lifejacket, and who wears a spreader-bar harness or a wing harness regularly

Key Features

  • 50N CE-Approved Buoyancy (EN ISO 12402-5) – Meets the recognised standard for buoyancy aids used in supervised or near-shore watersports, giving you and your instructor peace of mind.
  • Zipfree Pullover Entry – No zip means no pressure point against a spreader bar, no zip pull snagging on a harness hook, and one less thing to fail on the water.
  • High-Cut Body – Sits above the hips so your harness waistband sits below it cleanly; works equally well with a seat harness or a hip harness.
  • Adjustable Shoulder Straps – Let you pull the vest snug to your torso so it doesn't ride up in the water or shift around during a wipeout.
  • Covered Side Adjustment Straps – Internal/concealed webbing pulls the side panels in for a dialled fit; the covered design stops raw webbing edges chafing through a thin rashvest.
  • 100% Nylon Outer Shell – Durable, fast-drying, and resistant to abrasion from wetsuits and harnesses.
  • Slim PVC Foam Core – Thin enough to move freely in, thick enough to provide real floatation — not just a token layer of foam.

Real-World Feel

Riders who have worn traditional zipped buoyancy aids over a harness will immediately notice the difference with the Star Zipfree. With no front zip, the fit across your chest is flat and even — there's nothing digging into your sternum when you sheet in hard on a kite or brace your elbow on the wing handle. The high cut keeps it completely clear of a waist harness, and it sits cleanly under a seat harness too without bunching. In the water, the 50N foam lifts your shoulders and keeps your face up, which matters most in the moments after an unexpected wipeout when you're sorting lines or waiting for a rescue. It's not a lifejacket — it won't self-right an unconscious person — but as a buoyancy aid for competent swimmers in supervised conditions, it does exactly what it says. The nylon shell dries fast between sessions and doesn't hold as much water as neoprene-backed vests, so it doesn't feel like you're wearing a wet sponge by the end of a long lesson day.

Setup / Fit

Pull the vest over your head like a T-shirt before putting your harness on. Start with the shoulder straps: loosen them fully, put the vest on, then tighten from the top down until the vest sits firmly against your torso without restricting a deep breath. Next, pull the covered side adjustment straps equally on both sides so the foam panels wrap close to your ribs. The vest should feel snug but not constrictive — you should be able to take a full breath comfortably. Once the vest is set, put your harness on over the top. Check that the harness waistband sits below the vest's lower hem, and that your spreader bar sits flat against the vest front. Re-check shoulder strap tension after your first few minutes in the water, as nylon can relax slightly when wet.

Materials

  • Outer shell: 100% Nylon

Pairs Well With

  • Pair with one of our wetsuits for a complete, layered setup on cold Irish Sea days — the slim profile fits cleanly over a 3/2 or 5/4 without bunching.
  • Building out your first kitesurfing kit? Browse our full range of kites — we can spec a complete beginner or progression package.
  • Running a wing and foil setup? Check our wingfoil gear — the Star Zipfree is one of the cleanest buoyancy aids to wear under a wing harness.

Why We Stock It

We're a rider-owned shop on the Wirral, and buoyancy aids are something we take seriously — the Irish Sea is cold, tides move fast, and even experienced riders get caught out. We stock the Mystic Star Zipfree because it's one of the few properly CE-certified buoyancy aids that actually works with a kitesurfing or wingfoil harness without compromise. No zip digging into your bar, no bulk pulling you off balance on a foil, no reason not to wear it. At £89.95 it's priced at a point where there's no excuse to ride without one. If you want to talk fit or suitability for your session type, give us a shout — that's what being a specialist shop is for.

FAQs

Is the Mystic Star Zipfree a lifejacket or a buoyancy aid?

It's a buoyancy aid, not a lifejacket. It's CE-certified to EN ISO 12402-5 (50N), the standard for buoyancy aids used in supervised or near-shore watersports where the wearer is a competent swimmer. It will help keep you afloat, but unlike a 150N or 275N lifejacket it is not designed to self-right an unconscious person. For kitesurfing, wingfoiling, and SUP, a 50N buoyancy aid is the appropriate category — and what most instructors and national governing bodies recommend.

Will it work with my kitesurfing harness?

Yes — it's designed specifically for use with a harness. The high-cut body clears a waist or hip harness completely, and the zipfree front means there's nothing for your spreader bar to press against. It works equally well with seat harnesses. Simply put the vest on first, then fit your harness over the top.

Can I wear it over a wetsuit?

Yes. The adjustable shoulder straps and side panels accommodate the extra bulk of a wetsuit. A 3/2mm fullsuit is straightforward. If you're wearing a thick 5/4mm suit, take your chest-over-wetsuit measurement before ordering and check it against the size chart, or contact us to confirm the right size.

What's the difference between the Mystic Star Floatation Vest and an impact vest?

The Star Floatation Vest Zipfree is a CE-certified buoyancy aid — its primary job is to keep you floating. An impact vest is designed primarily to absorb impact from water landings and is typically not CE-certified as a buoyancy aid. If you need certified buoyancy — for example, if your local beach, school, or insurance requires a CE-marked buoyancy aid — choose this floatation vest. Some riders choose to wear both.

Is the 2025 model the same as previous years?

The 2025 Star Zipfree (SKU prefix M25V-F-ST) is the current model year. The core design — 50N PVC foam core, nylon shell, overhead entry, harness-compatible high cut — has been consistent across recent model years, which is a sign Mystic got the formula right. Colourways update annually; the 2025 range is available in Black and Black/Red.

Does it come in women's sizing?

The Star Floatation Vest Zipfree is a unisex/men's cut available in S, M, L, XL. Mystic does produce women's-specific impact and floatation vests in their wider range — contact us if you'd like guidance on the best fit for a female rider.
