How to Maintain Your Kitesurfing Gear
Hey, Adam here from Northern Watersports and Northern Kites Kitesurfing School!
We use our equipment nearly every day during the season, so keeping it in top condition is essential, not only for its longevity but also for the safety of our students.
Here's how we care for our gear to maximise its lifespan and keep it performing at its best.
KITE CARE
- Buy a Quality Brand: Buy a new kite free from damage or wear
- Avoid Sand in the Bladder: When pumping your kite, check that the hose is free from sand. Sand in the bladder can lead to punctures, especially during folding.
- Pump to the Right PSI: Stick to the recommended PSI for your kite. Overinflating adds unnecessary stress to the stitching and leading edge.
- Choose a Safe Spot: Inflate your kite on sand or grass that’s free of sharp objects to avoid tearing the fabric.
- Pack it Dry and Sand-Free: Always pack your kite dry and free of sand to protect the canopy. While saltwater won't cause mould, freshwater trapped in the fabric will. Dry it properly before storing.
- Monitor Bridles and Pigtails: Check these for wear and keep them sand-free when connecting your lines. Damaged pigtails can compromise safety, so replace them if needed.
INFLATION PUMP CARE
Pump maintenance often gets overlooked, but it’s crucial for a smooth setup.
Here's what to do:
- Clean the Shaft: Wipe the pump after each session to remove salt and sand.
- Protect the Hose: Disconnect the hose when storing the pump to prevent kinks or damage.
- Lubricate Regularly: Open the pump periodically to clean out dirt and lubricate the shaft and gasket with silicone spray.
- Be Selective: Letting everyone at the beach use your pump can lead to excessive wear. Excessive heat and friction can damage internal components.
- Replace When Necessary: Pumps don’t last forever! Check out our range of new pumps when yours needs an upgrade.
BAR AND LINES
A reliable bar and quality lines are essential for safe kitesurfing.
Here’s how to keep them in excellent condition:
- Rinse and Dry: Wash your bar with fresh water after every session and let it dry completely.
- Check the Safety Line: The safety line inside the quick release can wear out over time. Check it regularly and replace it if needed. If unsure, bring it to us for an inspection.
- Inspect the Quick Release: Before each session, ensure your quick release works properly. Wash out any sand and check for wear on the elastics that hold it closed.
- Untie Knots Carefully: Knots in your lines reduce their strength by up to 50%! Soak knots in water and gently work them loose. If you’re struggling, we’re happy to help.
- Watch for Pigtail Wear: If the protective sheath on your pigtails is damaged, replace them. We stock spares for all major brands.
WETSUIT CARE
A little TLC can keep your wetsuit feeling fresh and comfortable for much longer:
- Rinse After Every Use: Always rinse your wetsuit with freshwater to remove salt and sand.
- Use a Cleaner: Wash it occasionally with wetsuit cleaner or shampoo to keep the neoprene soft and odor-free.
- Dry Properly: Never dry your wetsuit in direct sunlight. Instead, hang it in a cool, shaded area and rotate it to ensure even drying. A Surflogic Pro Dryer is a great investment for quick drying.
- Store on a Wide Hanger: Use a wide hanger through the neck or fold it at the waist to avoid damaging the neoprene. Check out our range of surflogic accessories
- Avoid Creases and Sharp Objects: Don’t fold it tightly, and handle it carefully to prevent tears.
- Skip the Pee: Urine can degrade neoprene and cause odours—so, resist the temptation!
HARNESS AND LEASH CARE
Your harness and safety leash is one of your most critical pieces of gear. Keep it comfortable and secure with these tips:
- Rinse After Use: Wash off salt, sand, and debris with fresh water after every session. Focus on buckles, Velcro, and straps.
- Dry in the Shade: Let your harness air dry in a shaded area. Prolonged sun exposure can weaken the fabric.
- Inspect for Wear: Check the stitching, webbing, and buckles for any signs of damage. Replace worn components promptly.
- Store Correctly: Keep your harness in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Protect Metal Parts: Rinse metal hooks and buckles thoroughly to prevent corrosion.
- Replace When Necessary: If your harness shows significant wear or loses support, it’s time to invest in a new one.
By buying quality equipment and following these care tips, your kitesurfing equipment will stay in great shape for many seasons, helping you get the most out of every session.
