A coiled calf leash spends most of a downwind run getting in the way rather than doing its job — snagging on transitions, wrapping a leg, whipping the board back at you when it finally comes tight. Ride Engine's new RE:TRACTABLE Reel Leash moves the whole system to a retractable reel worn at your waist, so the line stays out of the way until the moment it's actually needed. We've just brought it into stock, and it's the first reel leash we've carried.

The Ride Engine RE:TRACTABLE Reel Leash: 1.8m of Kevlar weave webbing wound onto a spring-loaded reel, worn at the waist.

How it works

Inside the reel is 1.8m of Kevlar weave webbing wound onto a spring. Ride around normally and the webbing stays retracted against the reel. Fall off and it pays out, holding the board — and more importantly the foil — at a controlled distance instead of firing it straight back at you. Retraction is deliberately gentle: there's no aggressive snap-back once tension comes off, so you're not getting yanked around by your own leash mid-session.

The spring itself is titanium PVD coated, which is a bigger deal than it sounds on a spec sheet. This is a moving mechanism that lives in salt water. An uncoated spring seizes solid inside a season; the coating is what actually lets this thing survive UK conditions rather than just look good in a product photo. The whole unit weighs 100g, and on the water you genuinely forget it's there — which is the entire point of a leash you're not fighting.

Waist belt or calf strap?

Ride Engine sells the RE:TRACTABLE Reel Leash in two mounting options, and we've brought in the waist belt version, which comes with a padded neoprene belt. For most riders we'd take this over a calf strap — it's more comfortable across a long session and keeps the reel well clear of your feet during transitions and water starts. The calf-mounted option makes more sense if you're already running a second leash and want to keep the two systems physically separate rather than both at your waist.

Who it actually suits

Wing foiling, parawinging and downwind — anywhere you're moving around the board and don't want a leash wrapped round a leg. It's a particularly obvious upgrade for downwind, where a conventional coiled leash spends the entire run catching on something. If you're mostly doing short, flat-water sessions on a short leash, the case is weaker — it's not the cheapest leash on the wall, and a standard coiled leash will do the job for that kind of riding.

Where it earns its money is the opposite scenario: long wing sessions and downwind miles, where you're spending real time away from a static stance and a leash that's constantly in the way starts to actually cost you comfort and safety over a session.

The honest bit

A reel leash is a mechanism, and mechanisms need looking after. Rinse it properly with fresh water after every session — that matters even more if you're riding somewhere that picks up sand as well as salt. Do that consistently and it'll last you years; neglect it and no coating on earth will save the spring long-term. It's a maintenance habit worth building in alongside rinsing your harness and foil, not an extra chore to skip when you're cold and packing up.

Quick take: if you're putting in downwind miles or long wing sessions, the RE:TRACTABLE Reel Leash removes a genuine annoyance for £120. If you're riding short, flat-water sessions on a short leash already, you probably don't need the upgrade yet.

For the rest of the leash range — coiled, straight, board and parawing options from FBC and others — see our full leash guide, which covers how to pick the right type for your riding rather than just the reel option.

FAQ: Ride Engine RE:TRACTABLE Reel Leash

What does "RE:TRACTABLE" mean on this leash?

RE:TRACTABLE is Ride Engine's name for this retractable reel mechanism — the Kevlar line pays out under load and retracts gently once tension is released, rather than staying loose and coiled like a traditional leash.

Waist belt or calf strap — which should I buy?

We stock the waist belt version, and it's the one we'd recommend for most riders: it's more comfortable over a long session and keeps the reel clear of your feet. The calf strap suits riders already running a second leash who want the two systems kept separate.

Will the spring corrode in salt water?

The internal spring is titanium PVD coated specifically to resist this. It will still last far longer if you rinse it with fresh water after every session — that habit matters more than the coating alone.

Is a reel leash better than a normal coiled leash?

For downwind and long wing sessions, yes — it stays out of the way until you actually need it and doesn't snap back aggressively when it pays out. For short, flat-water sessions, a standard coiled leash is cheaper and perfectly adequate.

How much line does it give you?

1.8m of Kevlar weave webbing, which pays out from the reel when you fall and holds the board and foil at a controlled distance rather than letting them swing back at you.

How much does it weigh?

100g for the complete unit, including the reel and quick-connect attachment.

What disciplines is it designed for?

Wing foiling, parawinging and downwind foiling — anywhere you're moving around the board rather than holding a static stance.
